Comments Thread For: Sergio Martinez Feels Healthy, Not Worried About Layoff

NEW YORK — By the time Sergio Martinez steps into the ring to fight Miguel Cotto on June 7 at Madison Square Garden, the aging Argentine star won’t have fought in more than 13 months.

The WBC middleweight champion isn’t concerned, however, about the longest layoff of his 16-year pro career. After all the injuries he suffered before and during his fight 10½ months ago against Martin Murray, Martinez welcomed the long break to allow his left hand, left shoulder and right knee to heal properly.

Hope he listens to his doctors, there are plenty of people that get re-injured or screw themselves even worse, because they have this feeling they know better than the doctor and start training before the given time. Or they "feel" good already and decide to come back too soon.

So what has he been doing to substitute road work? Swimming? that would almost be more beneficial if he has, from what i hear

WTF??? He can't do roadwork till the end of the month??? I got a feeling his knee is going to give out in the middle of the fight like Yuri Foreman's did.

That would be the best...Vitali did the same the last yeats of his career...a lot of swimming...but the problem is that Martinez is scared of water and if i remmeber right he cant even swim.

Martinez is also a cyclist so I doubt not be able to do road work until april will really affect him. he can just ride a stationary bike.

if Martinez's rehab goes well his knee will be a lot stronger than before.

if you look at the Murray fight Martinez started his full training camp too soon and suffered an injury because of it.

I'd rather Martinez listen to his doctors and come into the fight healthy.

How sharp is he going to be on his feet of he can't even do roadwork until March 31st? The knee will probably hold out, but I can't see how he's not going to be slower.
