Yeah, impressive that he was undefeated and had such a high KO percentage, but he never beat a dangerous opponent, how can he be considered an ATG!? Many boxers of recent times got better resumes, including Froch, Kessler, Ward, Calzaghe, Mayweather, Pacquiao, Wladimir, Abraham, Hopkins, etc... I'm not saying that Marciano is not good, but he is certainly not a proven ATG.
Well... Archie Moore was an okay win.
Galzaghe? You have to be kidding putting him on that list. I think almost everyone would agree that Calzaghe has the worst record of any star fighter. Almost everyone he defended his wbo joke title against weren't even top 15 fighters. He fought more cans then anyone I know of!
He fought the best his devision and the lightheavyweight division had to ofer so show him some respect:*******:
Just because he wasn't flashy doesn't mean he didn't have skills. He looked like a bum until you got in the ring with him just ask all time great Archie Moore

Calzaghe beat prime undefeated Kessler, a Hopkins who was old but in no way shot and would go on to win titles, Calzaghe beat undefeated prime Jeff Lacy, etc. Where are Marciano's signature wins? Shot Joe Louis? Calzaghe got a far better resume than Marciano, it's not even close. We're talking two undefeated retired champs here, all we can go by is the guys they beat and Calzaghe is far ahead at that point.
I think Marciano was great. There was no fighter that I heard about that he should have fought but didn't. Marciano was really just a light heavyweight yet he ruled the heavyweights for years. He often weighed in the low 180s and sometimes in the 170s and that is just hours before his fights. Since heavyweights have no weight limit he weighed in in street clothes after a good meal and drinking all the fluid he wanted. He could easily have weighed in striped down and a bit hungry and weigh 175 with lots of time for a big meal before the fight, He sure as hell did beat some great fighters. He knocked out Archie Moore, Ezzard Charles, Joe Louis and Joe Walcott. Three of them were good enough to have held the lineal world heavyweight title and all of them are hall of fame fighters. Ezzard Charles is generally considered the best light heavyweight in history and Marciano beat him in a 15 rounder and then knocked him out in 8 rounds. In both fights Charles weighed more than Marciano. Pound for pound the 5 ft. 10 inch 175-185 pound Marciano was a great fighter. To say he wasn't is the same as saying Charles and Archie Moore were not great because he KOed both of them while weighing less than they did.
Marciano trimmed down for his fights. He would walk around (and look in great shape at 200+) he would then get in "fighting shape." His trainer Charlie Goldman was a big fan of working the core. He called it the inside muscles. Marciano would train for months at a time, diet, working on cardio and core muscles constantly. By the end he was getting tired of being away from home for so long.
"“In exercising the muscles, this very important fact should be kept in mind: The external muscles must not be built up at the expense of the internal ones. "
"Goldman taught them to counter the left hook with the right hand and foot movement [stepping over to the right]. He taught them to use positioning, of hands, head and feet, and to block vision in the opponent’s left eye with the jab before letting the right hand go. Defensively he taught fighters how to adjust the gap by inches, how to ride back with a jab so it didn’t land, how to roll with a punch so it didn’t land with any power and then you were still in range for the counter. "
Charlie Goldman was Angelo Dundee's mentor (Ali and SRL fame). He was a fighter himself; fought for the crown but never got it.
Archie Moore was the Bernard Hopkins of his day with real skilled defense. Ezzard Charles was no joke either and neither was Jersey Joe.
