Doesn't matter so much if he gets to 49-0 or 50-0 with Maidana, Khan, and Garcia on his resume.....its an anticlimactic way to end his career when he could have done much more and proven alot more about what he can really do but if he doesn't care why should anyone else really.
Mayweather's Predicament

There are several boxers who retired undefeated with more than 49. People who don't know anything about boxing history talk about Marciano. You mention the "Great Marciano", but you should also be aware that his manager Al Weill was "connected", as was the Garden management.... and many of Marciano's fights were "set-ups". Every single formerly great fighter he beat was utterly worn out and doing it only for the money. Joe Louis was in and out of sanitariums before his fight. Far too much to mention now.As Mayweather enters the midway point of his 6-fight deal with Showtime, the anticipation continues to build, and with a current record of 45 wins with 0 losses - retirement begins to peak on the horizon. Assuming that Mayweather finishes his contract undefeated before hanging up the gloves. Will he simply ride off into the sunset, leaving behind a storybook ending to a lucrative career?
It would be out of character for a perfectionist like Mayweather to end things on a false summit, a decision that could haunt him until the end of his days. When the dust finally settles, he will only be one fight away from superseding the great Rocky Marciano. An accomplishment that would immortalize him in the sport of boxing, an achievement that may never be duplicated (no pun intended).
Will Mayweather accept the challenge and pursuit one last fight to establish himself as the greatest boxer to retire undefeated? If so, who would you consider to be a qualified candidate to face Mayweather on that historic night?
Marciano's claim to fame (ignoring the Mafia ties) is purely because it was a Heavyweight record. Other better fighters and records were in other weights. Julio Cesar Chavez was about 85-0 at one point. Oba Carr and Yori Boy Campas nearly as many. Far too much is made of 49-0 which in his da y was only about half or less of a career. He retired very suddenly when Floyd Patterson was knocking them all cold and won the title just 4 months after Marciano so suddenly retired.,.....( a week after giving a RING interview in which he said that he was fighting for the next several years that he was still learning.... etc.etc. I have the mag. (I think June 1956)...... All Boloney.Comment

Exactly this.Doesn't matter so much if he gets to 49-0 or 50-0 with Maidana, Khan, and Garcia on his resume.....its an anticlimactic way to end his career when he could have done much more and proven alot more about what he can really do but if he doesn't care why should anyone else really.
Why bother? Floyd Mayweather is the greatest fighter in an age. People want to see what he can achieve, what he's capable of. Can he beat Pacquiao? Can he clean out 154? Can he go to 160 and beat some great fighters to further solidify his claim to be an ATG?
No one cares, at this point in his career, that he's coasting to 12 round UD's without breaking a sweat. As you said it's adding nothing to his legacy. Maidana is basically a tomato can to someone on Floyd's level.Comment

Even if Mayweather reserved his 50th fight for Pacquiao it would no longer be a credible win at that point. Unless Pacquiao manages to avenge his previous losses impressively, nobody outside of Floyd's fan base would give him any credit.Comment
