  • Comments Thread For: Team Angulo: Canelo Situation Sends a Bad Message

MGM Grand, Las Vegas - Virgil Hunter, the trainer of Alfredo "Perro" Angulo (22-3, 18KOs), was disappointed that former WBC/WBA junior middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (42-1-1, 30KOs) was unable to make the contracted weight of 154-pounds.

Earlier today, the fighters reached an agreement for a max weight of 155-pounds, after Canelo realized this morning that he wouldn't be able to make 154 - and Angulo received $100,000 for the new weight limit, raising his purse to $850,000. Canelo weighed in at the 155 max, with Angulo coming in at 154.5. There will be a secondary weigh-in on Saturday morning, when neither fighter will be able to weigh more than 168-pounds.

I would agree with him but even if it was at the regular 154 limit Angulo still came in at 154.5 so he would have been over the limit too.

Why try to make 154 when you already knew your opponent would be over the limit and you had a new contracted weight. Think man. Think!

He did that only because he heard Canelo wasn't going to get down to 154 so he didn't bother to do so either.

It says it's a one way stipulation and only Canelo can be cracked with a monetary fine if they come in over 168. Don't know if this is a mistake but if it isn't it makes no sense and why would Angulo care and still come in at 168lb if there's no penalty .

They agree to the limit of 155 in the morning so angulo didnt have to make 154, so he didnt

Article didnt make sense, said both have to make 168 but only Canelo would be fined for not making 168

Sounds like Angulo will receive extra cash for being under 168

I want to agree but there is the possibility that Angulo was never on weight to begin with. Unless someone can prove that Angulo was on target for 154 before the weigh in, we don't know if Angulo couldn't cut that last half pound or let himself relax when he heard 155 was the new limit.
