Duplicity, I've really enjoyed the way that you handled yourself in this thread. I'm also amused by the refusal of the posters who are attacking you to respond to anything that you’ve actually posted, instead of creating straw men and hurling invective at you. You really touched a nerve.
      I guess I'm crazy, huh??..

Manfredo, Malignaggi: Italian glove storiesBy Joe Tessitore
      Special to ESPN.com

Let me get it out of the way. Yes, I am an Italian American. My name screams it, and if you tune into any ESPN show I am broadcasting, surely it doesn't take more than a quick look to confirm it.

My people have celebrated, and cringed a few times, as pro boxing and our Italian culture have danced together through the last 60 years of American sports history. Willie Pep's sterling defense, Rocky Marciano's undefeated glory, Ray Mancini's heartwarming realization of his father's dreams, Rocky Balboa's Academy Award: That's all good.

The Mafia-boxing connections, the abusive Jake LaMotta, Vinnie Pazienza's name change, Balboa's ignorance: No thanks.

With respect to Joe DiMaggio, Vince Lombardi and Jim Valvano, the truth is baseball, football and basketball don't come close to the Italian-American connection boxing has.

Manfredo (right) wears his colors on his trunks.
More Italian-Americans have gained elite level success in the ring than on any field or court. But beyond that, it is the way the sport and Italian-American ethnicity seem to blend that constantly fascinates me.

This is a big week of ESPN boxing. A much anticipated "Friday Night Fights" (ESPN, 9 ET) card will rev us up for a "Contender Special" Sunday night (ESPN, 9:30 ET). Both cards are full of established TV fighters. Both main events are headlined by Italian-Americans.

Also, Paul Malignaggi meets Donald Camarena in a junior welterweight contest. The New York boxer has battled his own hands more than opponents lately, but if he can overcome the injuries, he's what boxing needs coming from New York. He's got the goods, he's entertaining, and he's Italian.

Boxing always needs Italians in the fight game....

Oh and thanks for the link. That was a hilarious fluff piece on two utterly unaccomplished fighters.

            • Quick : name Joe Calzaghe's best win? Other than an inactive, 36 yr old Kostya Tszyu, who is Hatton's best win? Name ANY premium fighter that Arturo Gatti has beaten. All are "media stars" with you guzzling their collective spunk.
Tszyu was still thought to be a force, and he destroyed Sharmba Mitchell in his comeback fight. Tsyzu was 36, but not neccessarily that over the hill. He has not had a fight since Hatton to prove if he was over the hill, but given that he hung in there for 11 rounds or so vs Hatton I don't think you could say Kostya was that depleted.

You are foolish to hate on Gatti. No one says Gatti has great skills. No one says Gatti is a great champ. You are a liar to imply that he is hyped beyond what he is. People like to see guys get hit, come back from punishment and win dramatically. Gatti has done this several times. That is why he is a star. When's the last time Gatti was introduced by HBO as a great champ? Never. He is only stated to be what he IS, and that's a blood and guts warrior.

Hatton has a big win over Tszyu and is a champ now, so you should respect him. He certainly doesn't deserve to be trashed. You could do a lot worse than beating Kostya Tszyu. Hatton is young anyway, who are you to judge him. You are nothing but a cool breeze on Hatton's ass. I'm not a big Hatton fan, but I'll laugh in your disgusting face if Hatton gets some big wins vs Floyd and Cotto.

You are judgemental and blinded by your racial bias. Get serious, then come back.

                1) PBF and Oscar hit and punished Gatti.. How'd that dramatic comeback go? Merciful stoppage against Delahoya and Gatti quit on his stool v. Mayweather.

                2) Kostya Tszyu's best wins? Zab Judah and Sharmba Mitchell? Impressive. The same guys that PBF gets criticism for fighting? I see.

                3) I didn't merely "imply" that Gatti is overly hyped. Get your rhetoric right. I said it overtly.

                Here's a clear example:

                http://tigerboxing.com/articles/inde...aid=1001245422

Gatti’s eleventh round knockout of Thomas Damgaard earned him a shot at Welterweight champion Carlos Baldomir in July and made him a leading contender for yet another fight of the year award.

The article was entitled "Another gatti legend". Was it that? If I hadn't seen the fight, I would have thought....

They are hyping gatti/damgaard as a "contender for fight of the year". A WEEK AFTER PACQUIAO/ MORALES!! What a joke.

If you want an example of someone calling Gatti a "skilled, technical fighter:

                http://poundforpound.blogspot.com/20...-damgaard.html

The arc of his career is amazing, in all honesty, as he went from being a brawler as a young man to a skilled, technical fighter as an older one. He looked great tonight, in spite of hurting his right hand in the third or fourth round. He hit Damgaard with power punch after power punch, bloodying and staggering the guy all night. He ended Damgaard's night with a nice flurry in the 11th round, winning the IBA welterweight title in the process.

Yeah. Arturo is very skilled and technical. He's a regular Winky Wright.

                Who's the liar?

                4) Quotes by Gatti before he QUIT against Mayweather:

q: Do you consider Mayweather a step up in competition?

Gatti: I have been boxing all of my life. I have boxed the best. I boxed against professionals as an amateur. He’s not the best I have ever fought, not at all.

Gatti: The fight will be exciting, and I'm going to explode on him. I am going to use my hands and listen to Buddy. We know what we are going to do and that’s how I’m going to do it in this fight.

Gatti: He never did (have to dig deep) and we’ll see how much balls he has. I know I have a big heart and a lot of balls. I don’t think he has that and I think he’s going to need them on the 25th.

*****Uh, Yeah. OK, Arturo. I'm sure Leonard Dorin and Gianluca Branco were MUCH better than Mayweather.*******

5)"Disgusting face", even. LOL. Grow up, son. But the insults let me know that you are angered and I hurt your feelings. I smell blood in the water.

                6) I would expect Hatton to beat Cotto. I don't think Cotto's style and lack of defense will hold up well under Ricky's pressure. Mayweather? It will be a humiliating experience for you when your daddy Ricky steps into the ring with PBF. And he knows it. Which is why he has declined the fight offer three times and is still asking for tuneups.

                sez Ray Hatton:

Hatton said: "There'll be more pressure to fight Mayweather now from the Americans because, obviously, there's one less big fight out there for Floyd Mayweather now Zab Judah has lost. But a fight with Mayweather has always been very high up the agenda for us; but we still want one or two fights in America before we get to Mayweather. If anything, Judah's loss has make us even more attractive in the marketplace."

But Hatton believes his son needs the experience of fighting abroad before he takes on the super-talented three-division champion Mayweather.

He said: "Richard needs the experience of training aboard for a fight for the very first time, getting used to that, he needs to have the experience of doing everything the American television and media will expect him to do, getting used to the different time zones, fighting in front of an American crowd - all that.

"And I don't want him to have to deal with all that for the very first time and fight someone like Mayweather as well. Richard isn't a big head, he's got no ego on him, and he will tell you himself that Mayweather is the biggest danger out there for him.

"different time zones"??..."an american crowd".. Why wasn't that a problem when other people went to Manchester?? What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

Spell my name right on the trophy, *****.
