Please don't think that way. A house is an asset by it's very nature. Everyone should strive to own their own home. If you choose not to keep up with your responsibilities, then you are making it a liability. There's maintenance, property taxes and homeowner's insurance, but you get much more than renting in the long run.Comment

Taxes arent high in the 7 cities. I used to live there. I am a homeowner in huntsville, a comparable area.. my tax is 560 a year on a 150k house.
There is also a retired nfl player in that family. Taxes werent the problem.. coke is.
but I can see you are determined to defend this.
I'm familiar with property taxes in four states. For the purposes of illustration, we'll use a $300k home as an example. In Williamson and Travis counties in Texas, you would be paying over six thousand a year. In central Florida (Orange, Osceola, etc.), you would be paying about four. In New York (Sufflok, Nassau, Westchester, Putnam, etc.), you would be paying between seven and eight. And in Las Vegas, Nevada (Clark county) you would be paying about four.
A retired NFL player in the family means nothing. Some of the highest paid athletes in the game wound up broke, let alone an unknown player.Comment

Pea has bad personal demons so this isn't terribly surprising. This is very sad though, not going to rag on him just going to wish him and his others the best.Comment

I like real estate in other countries, where once you buy the home, it's yours. There's no property tax and other fees forever haunting you. Only thing you have to do, or not do, is keep up with maintenance.Comment

I used to live in a crib that was worth $230K or so, and the property tax on that was near $10K. And that was a few years ago. Now, it's probably like $12, 13KComment

Is that for a single family home? If so, that's beyond cheap.

Unbelievably cheap actually. Because on the east coast (NY, NJ, MA, etc) or west coast (CA), no way are you going to pay that kind of cheap tax. No way jose. A $150K crib, you're going to pay $4K, 5k, 6k, if not more.

Besides all that.. its a moral issue for me. Id sooner own only the clothes on my back than renege on a gift to my family. Maybe that's just me.Comment
