  • Comments Thread For: Mike Alvarado's Trainer: Marquez is Tailor-Made For Us!

As previously reported by BoxingScene.com and other outlets, a matchup between former four division champion Juan Manuel Marquez and former junior welterweight champion Mike Alvarado is close to being finalized for May 17th in Inglewood, Calif. The fight would take place at the recently renovated Forum which used to be the home of the Los Angeles Lakers.

BoxingScene.com recently caught up with Alvarado's trainer Shann Vilhauer to get his thoughts on the fight.

This fight is kind of odd... Now I have GREAT respect for Marquez... But weren't he and is team saying we gain nothing from Provodnikov, etc etc...

So now they fight the guy who Provodnikov BEAT and took his title from?

I have no problem with this fight- but lets all be honest here.... JMM or someone on his team ducked Provodnikov... There's no way you can sugarcoat it. I'm fine with it, but the reality is someone in his camp felt Ruslan was too dangerous of a fighter and went with the easy fight instead of the legacy fight (yes, beating the hot champion does more for your legacy then beating the guy who lost his belt to said champion)

Just pointing this out, because I had no idea this fight was happening

They Said The Same Thing Before Provo

But their timing is good. As long as drug testing is in place, Marquez is just another slow, 40 year old counter puncher that will be a day late on all his punches and lose a decision to Alvarado. Marquez wanted no part of a physical beatdown at the hands of Provo so he opts for Alvarado, which made no sense except they wanted to hand pick a safer route for JMM, assuming they could get by Alvarado and still hang around begging Bradley for a rematch provided he beats Manny. That doesn't happen either. Pacquiao will beat down Bradley, Alvarado will win a decision over Marquez, and Marquez will not fight Bradley or Pacquiao again, and just go disappear. And he should. What a gutless move by Marquez to select Alvarado over Provo, who destroyed Alvarado in his own backyard. Marquez took less money, and no title shot, picking Alvarado over Provo. Just plain ******. So what if Provo has your old title. Go seek to win it a second time. Boxing is about fighting Champions, fighting the best, if you just want a sparring session, stay in the gym Marquez. What a weasel.

if there is no big sequels of the beating he took from provo he can pull it off IMO. marquez is already 40, but again, alvarado has been in 3 wars in a row (KOd twice)

Alvarado's team might have a point. I didn't realize that when Marquez knocked Manny the **** out, Marquez weighed-in at only 143, and Manny was 147. Marquez is a little man, not a true welterweight, but a bigger Jr. Welterweight. Alvarado should be able to handle Marquez easily, especially since Marquez is 40. Then again, I thought Cloud would beat Hopkins too, and I was dead wrong.

Marquez should retire, his age is definately showing, he look too slow in Manny's and Bradley's fights, his legs are not there any more, he will get unnessary punishment fighting guys way above his own weight (135) was the last wheigh in which he carried his power. He has great timing thou, lucky punch over Pacman is BS....Marquez is one of the wisest guys in boxing today, he sets up traps that many is a sucker for, but not bradley, Bradley would not engagge and beat Marquez slow ass to a UD, that by the way IMO it was Closer than many of you guys have it.

You're full of ****. Marquez one punch KO was his Hail Mary. He never knocks anyone out with one shot, he caught Pac careless and stumbling forward at the end of the round. Marquez was knocked down the round prior, was behind on all scorecards, bloodied and out of gas. Sets traps!!! Lol, you read too many blogs. He never set traps in 3 previous Pacquiao fights. He never set traps against Mayweather or Bradley. He won't fight Manny again because he knows he can't get lucky like that again. He trained his azz off and juiced with no drug testing in place, and was still out of gas after 6 rounds. If he makes the mistake of fighting Pacquiao again, he won't finish the fight.

He's got a 2.5 inch height advantage and a 2 inch reach advantage.

He has a good chance IMO. Only reason I didn't like it was because the comments Nacho and Marquez made
