The World Boxing Association is deeply mourning the death of former champion Antonio Cermeno, which occurred early today in Venezuela. According to reports, in the early hours of this morning he was found dead on the banks of the Caucagua-Higuerote highway. Cermeno had been kidnapped in the evening hours yesterday near the hotel Makro La Urbina, where he lodged with his family.
The information released so far is that Cermeno was the victim of a kidnapping that ended in murder.
Cermeno was born on March 6, 1969 in Río Chico. He was the WBA champion after beating Puerto Rican fighter Wilfredo Vazquez in Puerto Rico on May 13, 1995. He held the super bantamweight belt and held it until 1997. He then reigned at featherweight from 1998 to 1999.
