Comments Thread For: Martinez's Adviser: Miguel Cotto Will Pay For Humiliation

Sampson Lewkowicz, adviser to WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28KOs), says the fight with Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31KOs) is very personal to his fighter.

Martinez is still bothered by an incident from a few years ago, where the Argentine boxer claims Cotto snubbed him at the ESPN studios. Lewkowicz says Cotto were disrespectful when Martinez came over to shake his hand, a gesture which Cotto blew off, according to Martinez.

Wish they were so brave and manly when it came to Golovkin.

    Fake cowards.

Martinez was pretty animated when he faced Jr. and he said that it wasn't personal, I could only imagine how he's going to be in the faceoffs, and 24/7's against a guy he thinks it's personal.

Martinez can be intimidating when he's angry. In the faceoff with Chavez Jr., he was scary. Still, if Martinez overdoes it, it might come off as fake and staged. If Martinez shows up anywhere near Chavez Jr. form, Cotto will wish it was Austin Trout in the ring. Of course, how intimidating can Sergio be with a knee that still causes him pain?

I actually think that the best thing for Martinez's career right now is for him to win, but to look very vulnerable in the fight. To look beatable. If he looks dominant they're going to push the dangerous GGG at him.

If he looks vulnerable, you're looking at possibly Mayweather going up to 160 to fight him, Pacquiao might challenge him at 54, a rematch with Cotto, all other possibilities not involving the butt kicking I'd think he'd get at the hands of GGG>

I'm not really sure how he could look vulnerable against Cotto. Cotto will be so much smaller than Martinez's previous few opponents. Even if he looks vulnerable, he might just take another long layoff. Even after this fight, he is tied to HBO for one more fight. So no Mayweather fight. I personally hope Martinez does look dominant against Cotto. A Chavez Jr. version of Martinez against Golovkin would be a terrific fight.

True. Martinez might actually look like a stalking power puncher against Cotto.

Martinez by stoppage. if the knee isn't right it won't matter cuz he's the bigger fighter anyways. he won't have to run from cotto

All Cotto needs is a good corner and excellent conditioning. COTTO follows thw game plan as long as it is an effective one! When he lost Pac he had no corner people seem to overlook or forget about that factor.- Cotto listens and dependa on his corner, Roach is going to have him on point - every trainer that gets him always say how much skill he has and how they though hw was shot etc.. aa long as he doesnt walk into something with Sergio - he has a good shot...

I gotta wonder, since when is it a smart idea to swarm a fighter who's a terrific counterpuncher and packs one punch knockout power...who's also about 15 lbs heavier than you? Martinez got the better of Chavez on the inside. He took Chavez's left hooks to the body, so I think he can take Cotto's. Why doesn't Martinez go after Cotto?
