Comments Thread For: Cedric Agnew Considers Sergey Kovalev To Be 'Ordinary'

We won’t know for sure until March 29 if Cedric Agnew even belongs in the same ring with Sergey Kovalev.

It is clear, however, that the undefeated contender from Chicago isn’t short on confidence. He doesn’t think all the hype surrounding the ruthless Russian knockout artist is justified, either.

“I think he’s a pretty good, decent fighter,” Agnew said regarding the 12-round fight for Kovalev’s WBO light heavyweight title. “But I don’t see nothing spectacular coming from this guy. To me, my personal opinion, I just think he’s ordinary.”

KOvalev is one of the last guys in boxing you want to talk trash to.

He's a dangerous puncher, but he's sloppy at times and could probably be neutralized by a really good boxer.

When he gets into the ring with Sergei he'll get to test his theory. After the fight he'll have to go back to formula.

Nice to see he is bringing some confidence with him without sounding too pigheaded. That confidence will no doubt go out the window the second he feels Kovalevs power.

One with a very good chin too I should think. No, I know what you're saying - a very good spoiler, a Ward or a BHop (though perhaps not 50 yo BHop) might do it, but whilst Kovalev isn't always defensively responsible, there are some things he does very well, such as controlling range, timing opponents and mixing up his combos. I think he'd be a challenge for the very best, and I hope we get to see that tested.

I've never seen Agnew fight but it looks like he's undefeated and looking at his record he doesn't seem to be a powerful puncher with his past four wins going to a decision. Other than beating Yusef Mack by decision, there isn't anyone else on his resume that is a known fighter. Kovalev's resume is much more impressive but styles of course makes fights. If Agnew pulls off this win it will no doubt be the upset of the year.

Hopefully this fight will end quickly and Agnew won't get badly hurt. He's undefeated and at least he's brave enough to take the fight so he should get credit for that
