Comments Thread For: Golovkin's Trainer Sees No Reason To Move Up, For Now

Abel Sanchez, the trainer of WBA/IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26KOs), sees no reason for his fighter to move up to 168-pounds - until all of their options are fully ruled out at 160-pounds. Sanchez would like to see Golovkin clean out the middleweight division by facing the other champions at the weight. If none of the champions are going to face him in the immediate future, then we might see Golovkin go up in weight.

Of course, Golovkin should pursue big fights at 160 for now. He's the best MW in the world right now.

Abel is correct. GGG should try and unify with at least one other title.

The argument about unifying is ok in general, but sometimes you have to consider the current weight class vs. the weight class he would move to.

Lets face it, Sturm and Quillin are bums, I dont really care to see GGG fight either. He should wait for the winner of Cotto-Martinez and try to get that fight.

But if not he could move up to 168 where there would be plenty good (and potentially bigger money) fights for him

No reason to move up when he can be fighting the Ishidas, Adamas, Andy Lees, and Kirklands of the world.

how is he the best middleweight in the world? his last 7 opponents have lost a combined 30 fights before facing him. he's a very good fighter, but hes not great yet. Hes not even the best in his division yet. In comparison Sergio Martinez last 7 opponents had only lost a combined 5 fights before facing him. Sergio Martinez is still the best middleweight until he is beaten.

Dude is a middleweight. He's not Pavlik squeezing down. He's trying to clean out the division and then move up. We use to praise fighters for wanting to do this. Now punks like you B$tch and moan about it.

Hagler would have been trolled to death today.

Sturm and Quillin are bums? Quillin I don't particularly rate but he's unbeaten and has some OK wins.

Sturm - that'd be the same guy that many people thought beat DLH then? The 5 time MW champ who's been fighting at the top level for a decade?

I prefer not to use the B word about any fighter, but that statement is simply bizarre - arguably Sturm's not quite at his peak anymore, but he's shown he ain't far off either.

I agree he's gonna have to move up eventually, but it makes prfect sense to aim for the top fights at MW first - then hopefully he'll be able to bring the money to get the 'big fights' at 168 (and there ain't as many as people seem to be assuming).

Who is there who would be bigger than Sturm or Maravilla at 168 - Ward, Froch, Kessler (if he ain't retired)? Hell's GGG supposed to do then, go to 175? Fight the fringe contenders at 168?
