Lets stop calling fighters shot

You could've just titled the thread "There is a difference between shot, past prime, and damaged goods" and saved yourself from typing a whole essay about your opinion being that Cotto is only past his prime but you still think that he can easily make 147 and destroy everyone in that stacked division because you are his fan and don't figure that he fights in a less stacked 154 division because he can no longer make 147 without suffering any physically detrimental effects.Comment

To me this word is thrown around here a lot with no sense at all of what it means. For example Cotto. Anyone who thinks he is shot is a damn fool.
I said in another thread that Cotto is at a weight class right now where he gives up a lot of advantages almost every fight. Weight , size , reach , punching power. You name it and its almost certain any JR MW or MW takes Cotto on more than one of those categories.Still , you take Cotto back to 147 and he probably destroys everyone there.
So is Cotto really shot? Hell no , Past prime?? of course , but aren't Manny and Floyd also past their prime. Its not only talent that has kept Floyd at the top for so long. He is a crafty veteran with a very hard style to beat. But Floyd has lost a step. So has Pacquiao , and Martinez , Marquez.
Shot to me is Hatton , Mosley , Roy , Tarver , Mayorga , Taylor , Morales.
Damaged good , Juanma , Victor Ortiz , Cintron.
Past prime?? That's also another one that gets thrown around a lot. How many top veterans are still in their prime. You can argue Floyd is still in his because he is undefeated. But Floyd has lost a step. He is so damn good that its still a very large margin between him and his opponents. Floyd just has a lot of tricks , talent and a difficult style. But he is not in his prime. He keeps himself in damn good shape too. Which has helped him a lot.
And its not that it bothers me when we are trying to predict an upcoming fight. They are all good factors one has to consider. What bothers me is those who use it after the fight to defend their fighters "legacy" (I guess). Because they cant take their fighter losing a fight. And they fall back completely on these terms.
So who do you consider a shot fighter , past prime , damaged goods???
Hatton has never been shot. He just bit off more than he could chew for his comeback fight after more than three years of inactivity.
Tarver is not shot, he is just past prime. He hasn't lost since 2008, and had a very decent win over Green 2 years ago.
Mayorga isn't shot either. He is just getting old, and has never been that good to begin with.
Mosley, Roy and Taylor are indeed shot.
Juanma is a shot fighter if I have even seen one.
I agree that Ortiz and Cintron are not shot. They are mental midgets, and their heart isn't into boxing any more.
As for Cotto, of course he is not shot. No one sane would say he is.Comment
