    May-JMM
    Cotto-Margarito (I think)
    Cotto-Maravilla
    Margarito-Pacquioa

I am in the camp that these CW fights shouldn't happen that much but they have been happening a lot lately.
Ward vs Dawson was at 168.

Earliest? Hmm, top of my head probably Joe Gans-Joe Walcott in 1904.

Don't quote me on that but that's the earliest off the very top of my head.

There's been plenty of catchweight fights in history.

        Gans-Nelson
        Langford-Walcott
        Ketchell-Kelly.

There were a whole lot of catchweight fights back then. Possibly more so than now. And that was over 100 years ago.

Joe Louis-Billy Conn 1 was at a catchweight

        Whitaker-Chavez was at a catchweight.

Leonard-Lalonde was considered a catchweight at the time and actually started the legitimacy of the Super Middleweight Division. That division is built off a catchweight.

        There's many many more;

Villa-McLarnin, Griffith-Moyer, both catchweights. There's many more that's just the top of my head.

You are right. I forgot that Dawson came down to 168.

Some people call it Spear, some people call it an award and some fans like you call it a LONG SHARP SWORD..

Dan, you just taught me something. I honestly thought catch-weights were a relatively recent phenomenon. I would've never guessed all those old-timers had agreed upon weight restrictions. Thanks.

                No problem, brother.

Yeah, catchweights were quite common once upon a time. There were few weight classes we need to remember. It was harder for guys from separate weight classes to meet and fight.

Fighters didn't have Jr and Super divisions to meet in.

Gans-Walcott I believe was at a catchweight of 141 lbs.

I'm quite sure Fitzsimmons was involved in a few catchweights in between his jump from MW to HW so he could well have been the first or certainly one of the first to be involved in them. Can't think of which fights though.

Catchweight's were praised years ago, it's funny how it's the opposite now. Catchweight's allowed fighters to meet in the middle and allow fights fans wanted to see to happen.

                • I don't care if there is a catchweight or not, I still don't like them when used in title fights but if it's a good fight then I don't care as long as it gets made.
