This is why precedents are dangerous. If something is allowed to happen once, it can happen again. And if it happens more than once, then it can become the norm. As a kid, I never understood why my dad seemed to overreact if I got out of line. Now I understand. You gotta nip shit in the bud.

I understand what you mean. But **** I can think of like six fights without even really thinking about it that were at a catch weight in the last what four years? We have no control over that kind of stuff it just gets tiring hearing the fan boys hang on to and post about that **** over and over again. Well, at least until some other dumb **** comes along. I expect a great fight.

Maybe it's just all been gamesmanship, to get inside Martinez's head. We'll see soon enough if any of that stuff works.
It's just another way of showing Sergio he calls the shots IMO. Which is why Martinez is all upset over the negotiations and demands. He did the same thing for Margarito 2. The fight was held at 153 even though Cotto held a belt.

I guess it's just one of the things that identifies this era of boxing. There was once a time when there was one belt for each division, only eight divisions, etc. Soon we'll be saying, "Remember when there were no catch-weights?" I dunno. Whatever.

Looks that way. That approach might work, but it can backfire. Martinez seems like the kind of guy that holds a grudge and means it. Anger can impair a fighter's judgement, but the desire to methodically inflict pain can really motivate. It's been said that Emile Griffith killed Benny Paret because Benny called him a "maricon" prior to their fight. Coincidence?

Catchweights have been around a long time though.

How long ago is the first example you remember? And wouldn't you say they've become far more common than ever?

I know Leonard fought at a catch weight and De La Hoya against BHop. Just in the last 5-6 years there have been:

                  DLH-Pacquioa
                  Ward-Dawson
                  May-JMM
                  Cotto-Margarito (I think)
                  Cotto-Maravilla
                  Margarito-Pacquioa

I am in the camp that these CW fights shouldn't happen that much but they have been happening a lot lately.
