A lot of people have been asking who the hell Anthony Mundine is & why he is targeting a showdown with Floyd Maywether Jr. Well here is his story:
Anthony Mundine was the biggest star and highest paid player in the NRL (National Rugby League) which is like the Australian version of NFL in terms of popularity. He left in 2000 mid-season due the politics of the game & racisim and turned pro boxer at age 25 with no prior experience.
He was a Super Middlewight for most of his career. His biggest fights were against Mikkel Kessler, Danny Green, Antuwn Echols, Daniel Geale, Shane Mosley & Sven Ottke. He captured the WBA 'regular' title twice, the IBO middleweight title (doesn't really count) and the WBA interim junior middleweight title.
All his 51 pro fights have been on PPV and he has made a career and big money fighting 'Aussies'. People in Australia pay big money to see him because he is an entertainer, trash talker and can sell fight really well. He is not afraid of the 'bad guy' image. It is true that most people don't like him down under because of his outrages comments and remarks - but people still pay to watch.
No doubt he was a great athlete and possessed talent as a boxer. He could of been on level with Andre Ward and other top super middleweights and middleweights but he never stepped up competition earlier in his career.
