I do believe it was more of an emotional reaction than something he truly believes. The memory of having his fighters recently get embarrassed by Cubans just adds fuel.

True, but it kinda balances out. Cuba as a nation has a[n unnecessary] trade embargo placed on them by the states. So by landing in the states they're basically running from what the US probably perceives as an enemy nation.

A very outdated notion. Cold war is over man, the US should move on already. If they stopped the embargo, and designated Cuba as any other Latin nation, that special treatment Cubans get on landing would be gone in an instant.
