Khan's Market Value Overestimated?

Some interesting points. I think it may do decent numbers in the UK, but in the US it'll be below Guerrero, which is why i'm a bit surprised Showtime would want to make another big loss.Comment

From the U.S.A. perspective this fight will bomb because Khan isn't Mexican. Why would they pay to see a Pakistani-British guy fight on their holiday?
I know some dudes in the U.K. are interested in this fight like Weebler 1 but I think most people over there know this is a joke fightComment

Khan is a massive draw...period. Can anyone here name me 10 fighters in any weight division that are a bigger draw than him?
Things to consider...Khan's semi-final fight at the olympics drew 7.4 million viewers, the final against Kindelan...even more. You might say...well thats the olympics so what! To that I would say that Khan's rematch exhibition bout against Kindelan drew 6.4 million viewers, was a boxing event on its own merit and was one of the most watched Saturday night programmes for the entire year, and we are not just talking boxing or even sports...up to that point it had beat everything!!!
His first pro contract with Frank Warren was 7 figures. His pro debut was on prime time terrestrial tv - sell out, his pay check was £100,000.
The first time he headlined ppv was against Prescott (albeit a disaster), which was not even a world title fight, and he has been on PPV ever since (one way or another). He has sold out pretty much every fight he has ever fought in the UK, and probably could have continued to do this to the end of his career if he wanted, making 7 figure pay days at the same time. He decided to fight in the US because he wanted to fight the best, and climb the pound 4 pound rankings. His tv numbers have been solid in the US, whilst the gates have struggled, but I would say no more than most decent world champions in the US.
People are quick to forget that Floyd was the number 1 p4p fighter in the world as far back as 2005 and he was still not a bonafide draw, he was still relying on fighters like Gatti to make decent pay days, and gates. He was the b-side in the Gatti fight, and it was only after Oscar that his career actually took off and he became a crossover star. The US is not easy to crack, and it definitely takes quite a few high profile fights to actually become a star.
There are fighters out there such as Martinez, Matthysse, Chavez, Canelo, who are massive stars in their own country like Khan, and are probably bigger stars than Khan in the US. But they are few and far between, and the difference is they don't bring a UK income stream, which is significant - unlike those fighters from South America, etc. Another thing to consider is, there is a huge Middle Eastern and ****** population in the US, like the UK, now they might not be boxing fans like mexicans, but I'm sure at least some of these people will tune in for this fight if they know a ****** fighter is fighting Floyd Mayweather.
The way to look at this is the gate is going to sell out regardless, because its Floyd Mayweather. The fight will sell well on US ppv because its Floyd Mayweather, and his profile has never been bigger. He has just come off one of the biggest ppv's of all time, and he only has 4 fights left, there is no way this bombs! Sky will sell this fight like you wouldn't believe, Khan is a long shot, big underdog...but guess what? That is situation which Brits arguably find most appealing. All you will get in the build-up is highlights of all the great British upsets over the years...Honeyghan vs Curry, Mcguigan vs Napoles, Hatton vs Tszyu. This will do 500k buys minimum in the UK. But I would bet closer to 750K.
I can understand if you don't like the fight, you don't want to see it as a hardcore boxing fan. I agree Khan has not earned it, he has had mixed results at what I would call a level below elite. But please don't tell me this fight won't sell. Its complete and utter nonsense. His stock is low at the moment, and he still sold out against Diaz. The kid is a draw, always has been and probably will be until the day he retires, because above all else and all the BS I just wrote he is ****ing entertaining to watch.Comment

These are very good points here. People like to claim Khan is no draw, that might be true in the US, but in the UK people do know him. The kid has essentially been a millionaire since his first pro fight.Khan is a massive draw...period. Can anyone here name me 10 fighters in any weight division that are a bigger draw than him?

Khan has a three fight deal with Showtime and Khan already fought twice on their network. So he has one more fight left on his contract. So they are trying to cash out on Khan against Mayweather now.Do you guys feel like people are overestimating the earning power for a Khan fight? I personally don't think he's a star in the US, in fact, he never has been. Even when he had his best wins GBP were giving away free tickets a hotels to get a crowd in, and now his value has gone down even more after that last 2 fights.
Obviously they are relying on the UK to get PPV revenue, but even here he's not very liked. He's famous but not a public favourite at all.
Also, it's interesting that Showtime would allow for this fight because they ain't getting this overseas money, and you would think they would make another loss like the Guerrero fight, or most likely even worse.Comment
