Comments Thread For: Stevenson: Of Course Kovalev Wants Me, I'm Number 1!

Over the past few months fight fans have clamored for a unification bout between WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson, who is regarded as the best fighter in the division, and undefeated WBO champion Sergey Kovalev, who is regarded as his biggest threat.

Kovalev has repeatedly called out Stevenson and has intensified his efforts since they both appeared on the same card this past November, with both of them stopping their respective opponents.

Stevenson keeps making excuses in post fight interviews about fighting Kovalev. I'd wager the guy will avoid Kovalev right into retirement too. I don't think Stevenson is afraid but he knows the Kovalev fight is an extremely high risk. I am of the opinion that he wants to milk his title for as long as possible.

I agree. Kovalev is more skilled than Stevenson and I see a lot of flaws in Stevenson's defense. I see an early round KO.

At his age and in his position that is exactly what most of us would do. I certainly would not fight Kovalev until I had cleaned up all the low hanging fruit and would only fight him for a bumper pay day when there was nowhere else to go.

U can understand Adonis' reluctance to fight him, the guy is a beast but not HUGE money so the risk/reward ratio isn't how Stevenson would like it. He's also 36 and if he loses time isn't on his side to get back in line earn a shot and start making big money in title fights again.
But screw that this is a sport first and foremost and a buisness second, they should be Made to face each other, we the fans deserve to see the top two guys square off not to mention it makes for a power punching shootout!

I'm sure this is a rehash of an article from a week or 2 back - tho it might have been on a different site.

Anyhow, since then Stevenson's made mention of the 3 fight HBO deal including a Kovalev fight (presumably at the end of this year or early 2015).

Furthermore this article makes mention of a Fall return for Stevenson, when currently what seems to be on the cards is a March or April fight with Fonfara.

I want Kov to take Adonis head off but I want this fight to marinate (Not Arum styled doe).

Surely this fight is ready now?

Most of the people saying this fight needs to marinate are the same ones saying Adonis is 36 and doesn't have a lot of time left, etc

THIS is the legacy fight for both guys and this fight needs to happen asap, IMO.

Adonis keeps saying Kovlaev wants to fight him because he's #1... And that's true.... So why not defend against arguably the most deserving challenger to your throne then? (And unify titles in the process)

Translation: I'm #1, that's why LHW champ Sergey wants to fight me, but I'm just going to defend my title against lesser opponents
