There is a growing swell of opinion that Vasyl Lomachenko is the boxer best tailored to succeed Floyd Mayweather as the sport’s premier pound for pound fighter.

The 25 year old Ukrainian southpaw, who finally joined the pro game last October, might just have been the greatest amateur fighter ever.

The son of a boxing coach, he first laced the mitts at the age of just four. Despite operating at elite level for the overwhelming majority of his 397 bout amateur career, he was defeated just once - by Russian southpaw Albert Selimov who edged past him in the final of the 2007 World Championships in Chicago - when Lomachenko was still a teenager.

jaja. This writer is out of his mind. There are many others amateurs not with two Olympics golds like lomachenko but with 3. Teofilo Stevenson, the most famous amateur heavyweight had 3 golds and 3 world championships and Felix Savon had 3 golds in Olympics and 6 world championships. Rigo is far away better than this kid Lomachenko. Rigo gave a lot of credits to amateurs as world class boxers but not everybody is Rigo, specially Lomachenko and Xou Ximing.

The guys with 3 all fought there whole careers in the amateurs. Rigo and Loma both had 2 Olympic golds by age 24. (potentially Rigo coulda had 4 by now - certainly 3 if he hadn't defected before the 2008 Lympics).

We don't know if Rigo is better than Loma yet - their am record suggests Loma may be even better than Rigo, but we just have to wait and see I guess.

We've seen what Rigo can do as a pro fighter, but you can't say Loma isn't on the same level until you've seen him fight some more. What grounds do you have for saying 'Rigo is far away better than this kid'? It may turn out that he is, but as yet we have no basis for making a comparison except their amateur records, and Lomachenkos is better.

Its clear as day that Rigondeaux is lightyears ahead of this kid and Lomachenko's amateur record is better based on what exactly but a mere number? Rigo accomplished everything this kid did & 7 Cuban national titles, 2 golds in the IBA world cup too boot and against vastly superior competition.

Rigondeaux was destroying guys like Gamboa, Tsujimoto, Malakbeckov, Kovalev, Petchkoom, Mammadov etc etc

The kids noway near Rigondeaux's level and frankly never will be & if they ever do meet, expect Lomachenko to get his ass handed too him.

People was claiming Rigondeaux was nothing more than an impressive amateur but this kid really is just that. He won't cut it in the pros. I wouldn't even be so sure the kid gets past Salido.
I don't think hes anything special anyway. Hyped up via an impressive numerical statistic rather than his actual ability.

I look at this guy and think ''400-1 with two olympic golds, REALLY?'' it almost baffles me as much as Zou Schming another guy who I just don't see that X Factor with.

I won good money on him taking gold I just don't think he is all that. I don't see the star quality. He just don't look to me how I'd expect a fighter with the pedigree he has too look.

There is only one way to know who es better between Rigo and Lomachenko and is doing the fight. Is good both are active, but is Lomachenko the best amateur fighter ever?. For sure he is not. This article doesn't recognize far better amateurs boxers like Stevenson and Savon for example with much better records.

Your nonsense has already been responded to, and you ignored it. Savon & Stevenson both fought Amateur their entire careers, so no wonder they have better Amateur records.

Clear as day in what terms?

I do agree that as it stands Rigo is the better Pro fighter...but their styles are so different that it is nearly impossible to compare them at this stage.

For all we know Loma could land punches on Rigo and he could be rewarded a decision for being the aggressor...Loma does have the speed and the reflexes to get away from Rigos counters...or it could be the complete opposite...Remember that Loma has a ton of experience and would fight Rigo very different than he did Ramirez...With Ramirez he went out swinging no respect for the opponent. Would be a different story against Rigo.

It is really hard to tell at this stage although I do give the nod to Rigo...even though I can see Loma going further just because he has a more "fan friendly" style.
