  • Comments Thread For: Tyson Fury Makes Amends With WBC, Focuses On Future

As the search continues to find an opponent for Tyson Fury’s next scheduled fight, the heavyweight contender and his team have been forced to perform some damage control.

The unfiltered Brit is no stranger to controversy, with hurling colorful insults practically a part of his daily routine. However, recent comments made in the direction of the World Boxing Council (WBC) managed to land Fury in hot water, as the unbeaten 27-year old took exception to recent developments in their heavyweight rankings.

“I’ve beaten everybody they put in front of me, but the WBC have done a little sly trick,” Fury alleged on Buncey’s Boxing Podcast earlier in the month. “[T[here were three people eligible to fight for the vacant WBC title. One of them was me because I beat Kevin Johnson in a WBC eliminator. Another one was Bermane Stiverne because he beat Chris Arreola in an eliminator. And Chris Arreola won a semi-final eliminator against Seth Mitchell.

“Instead of letting me fight Stiverne for the vacant WBC (title), they’ve only gone and put him against a man he’s already beaten in his last fight comfortably. So I don’t know what’s happening there; someone’s paying a lot of money to somebody. They’ve frozen me out there.”

The comments were made prior to Fury’s placement on the February 15 show at Copper Box Arena in London, England. The short-term plan is to get a win, having not fought since last April, and then proceeding towards a potential rematch with Dereck Chisora, who tops the bill versus Andriy Rudenko.

By the time all of that plays out, the winner of such a fight could be looking at a mandatory title shot versus whomever is crowned in the yet-to-be-scheduled vacant title fight rematch between Stiverne and Arreola. Cognizant of this fact, Fury took a moment to step back, gather his thoughts and make amends.

"I would like to apologize to the WBC for the comments I made and any implications that resulted from them," Fury said in a statement released through his press agent. "Through no fault of my own I have been unable to fight since April with fights in September and February [Writer’s note: both were scheduled versus David Haye, who withdrew due to injury on both occasions] being cancelled. The entire situation and inactivity has left me extremely frustrated.” [Click Here To Read More]

      good move

Smart man, in the end his comments still stand as they were said, processed and repeated. Most fans of the sport can agree that a rematch between Bermane and Arreola is lame and that the organization went above and beyond to make concessions for Vitali Klitschko (for over a year of inactivity)...double standards much? In any case, Fury is making all the right moves.

Fury needs to stop running his mouth.

IMO, he'll lose his '0' this year; probably in a tune-up for a title fight.

Too bad. I thought it was pretty great when he said that about the WBC. But I understand it's smart to play ball with them. He doesn't have the juice to be able to go against the sanctioning bodies without paying for it.

To be fair, WBC's getting too much flack. When you look at WBC's HW rankings, they are legit rankings. Everyone in their top 10 are in my top 20 and their top 15 are close enough to be legit too. IBF is good as well. If we're calling these bodies crooked, lets direct that to the WBA or WBO, where they have some HW's outside the top 50 ranked in the top 10 and are just really off the wall in all their rankings.

The WBC ordered Banks and Mitchell winner to face the winner of Fury Johnson,so the mandatory for the Vitali vs Stiverne winner could be established,Arreola didnt figure in any part of those, until Fury ducked out.

Arreola vs Mithchwll was never an eliminator at all.Fury ducked the WBC fight offs to face Cunningham in the IBF (then ducked Pulev too)!

The guy is an idiot,he was expunged from the WBC rankings for refusing to play ball, you can't suddenly decide you want on play again because te champion has retired.

I wonder does anybody actually believe anything that comes out of his mouth, including himself.i can not tolerate this skank,he's an outright imbecile.

I don't think many guys would take a pulev eliminator over a david haye matchup in England do you? fury lost 5 million pounds. he'd get 100000-20000 fighting pulev. to me it makes all the sense in the world to take the haye fight. hen loses he's still young & a millionaire. he could take a break, the need to fight asap goes away which gives him more time to plot his next course. a loss to haye wouldn't hurt his ranking much other then drop him a few slots. a loss to pulev would set him back years & millions of dollars. fury has to change his tune now because he never fought in almost a year & didn't earn his 5 million win or lose...
