Comments Thread For: Gennady Golovkin Says His Focus is To Clean Out 160

In the 14 months since his US television debut, Gennady Golovkin has become one of boxing’s fastest rising stars as his fan friendly style and devastating knockout power has garnered him a lot of attention. His ratings on HBO have been stellar and his latest outing against Curtis Stevens this past November was the third highest rated fight for the network.

Despite his rising popularity, Golovkin still has not been able secure a fight with the other big names in the middleweight division. Golovkin and his team disclosed last year that they would be willing to fight anyone from 154 to 168 pounds in hopes of being able to land a big name fight.

Glad to hear that is his focus. I don't want him to move up until he beats some other title holders at MW.

Don't let HBO force James Kirkland on you, then. Make every available fighter at 160 turn you down before moving on.

HBO put the money up for Golovkin, there is little he can do. It's up to the fans to object and put pressure on the TV networks.

You can start by refusing to fight JMW's then. Tell your team you want real 160 lbs.

That's garbage talk. There ain't nothin to clean out at 160. I'd rather see him fight at either 154 (if he can make it) or 168. At least there's some better fights in those weight classes

                Great contribution.

HBO have to approve his opponents for TV. If they want Kirkland over Geale then that's what it's going to be. He who pays the piper calls the tune.

as a boxing fan this sucks that GGG can't fight the so called other champs. just adds to the bitterness that grows towards the sport when you cant make all the exciting fights happen in all divisions.

This is what I like to hear when I start my day lol. One of my favorite qualities about Golovkin is that he fights so frequently. He'll prove to be a p4p fighter by the end of this year.

I also like that he wants to clean out 160. That's what he should do. Try to take out Sergio, Quillen, Sturm, or Murray. If they don't want it, GGG will keep adding names to the 'Good Boy List' making them look worse and worse. If he keeps this up, in 2 years he'll make 8 more good boys lol

154 lbers don't bother me so much because I don't want him to go UP in weight too soon and have trouble coming back down in the future. I don't want there to be any doubt that he wasn't a monster. Maybe there is an error in my reasoning but it looks difficult to go up in weight and then back down. Names like Kirkland and Canelo will just be icing on the cake when it's all said and done.

That's not to say I don't want him to move up and take over another division. I'd like for him to get JCC Jr. fight him at 168-175 (I think he beats him at any weight), Froch and Ward. I know I sound like a total fanboy but I'm somewhat realistic since I don't think he'd beat Ward. I do think he beats everyone 168 and below except him.

War GGG! Become the new face of boxing.
