virtually all of the top amateurs are paid through sponsorships, grants, etc. their travel, training expenses, housing are often paid for.

how else would a 25 year old remain an amateur for so long?

Because the first fights were so good that the networks/promoters/fighters realized they would make money doing rematches. so they fought again.

Finances have never been unimportant to fighters. You can't say if they were unimportant to fans because there was no forum like this where people from arund the world can discuss the sport.

There just is no cuasal relationship between boxing's mainstream popularity and the financial information of the sports top stars.

Yeah sure, or if they received standard purses, or say 10% of gate, or had a salary for a contracted period (like the WSB) - I watch the Amateur sport with as great interest (though perhaps not always as much excitement) as the pro sport.

TBH the amount fighters get paid at the top level concerns me less than how little the lower echelon fighters receive for putting their health (and even lives) on the line.

I believe a percentage of every purse should be taken by the governing body in charge of the fight to set up a fund to ensure better medical cover and possibly a basic pension scheme - after all, the FMJs, PACs and Cottos of the world with Multi-million $ purses rest on the backs of the hundreds of journeyman who keep the sport going - why shouldn't they give something back?

You are making two different poins and are not accounting for the change in the sport.

Boxing shifted from mainstream TV to cable. Upon that switch, finances became more of an issue. Then cable companies started signing fighters to exclusive deals and selling fights on PPV-which made finances paramount.

ALl Fights used to be on free TV and were paid for by advertisers. then the major fights were on cable and paid for by subscribers. in this era the value of a fighters HBO deal was indicative of his status in the sport.

with he PPV era how much a fight costs is a direct indication of how prominent the fighter is and the casual fans expectation of the fight.

only in major fights in the 1980's were purses announced. today purses for the whole ppv card are sent out.

if it bothers you so be it. but you seem to be masking your real problem. how about you just post what your real beef is so we can discuss.
