  • Comments Thread For: Lucas Matthysse: I Knew Maidana Would Beat Broner

Junior welterweight contender Lucas Matthysse (34-3, 32KOs) is planning to return in late May or early April. Matthysse has been out of the ring since losing a twelve round unanimous decision to WBO/WBA champion Danny Garcia last September at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

"In late May or early April I could have my first fight back. I still don't know who the opponent will be so we are going to see about that. I'm third in the [WBC] rankings," Matthysse told Diario El Chubut.

You can tell matthysse and maidana have a great deal of respect for each other. Matthysse vs Broner, let the argies ruin broners career!

I hope Matthysse goes on and does the same as Maidana did when it comes to that chump broner.

I would say "hell yeah" otherwise, and I like all Argie fighters, but Matthysse is nowhere near as good as Maidana when it comes to putting on relentless pressure to break down his opponent. Maidana simply will not stop coming, and one day he will be TKO'ed because of it - and look like a warrior in doing so.

Matthysse tends to freeze up when things aren't going his way, or he elects to box too much with a boxer and lapse into inactivity (Judah, Garcia, and Peterson initially). I think the latter is part of what lost him the fight against Garcia, although the eye swelling and Garcia's excellent gameplan obviously had a lot to do with it too.

So unless Matthysse comes out guns blazing against Broner like Maidana did, and never stops pressing the action with his one-punch KO power, he'll get soundly outboxed from a distance. Unless, of course, Broner was so thoroughly brought down to Earth from the loss that he'll never be the same again...

Where was all that relentless pressure in his fight with Alexander? Devon didn't lose a round to Maidana while Matthysse dropped him and clearly beat him.
