This is a very good point although I also agree with others who are questioning the level of comptition at the time he faced them.... If kovolev got to Dawson first then he'd be the beast of the division. It's a tuff call ! Rigo did almost have a flawless outing against Donaire , who was on everyone's top 5 p4p at the time. And he decimated Agbecko for 12 rounds , but didn't devistate like Stevenson did..

it doesnt matter if kovalev would have also beaten dawson. ifs dont matter. stevenson got to him first and that's all there is to it. cuz once you get into if scenarios then you can just give the fighter of the year award to floyd every year. cuz you can just say IF floyd fought (fill in the blank with a name around 147), he would win and most likely win easily. this award is based on resume and simply put kovalev didnt put up the same resume that stevenson did. dawson + cloud is better than cleverly + campillo.

it's tough for rigo too, he didnt win in devastating fashion but a large part of that is because agebeko decided not to fight and showed up just to collect a paycheque. neither donaire nor pacquiao were very exciting when narvaez and clottey decided not to fight as well. rigo threw over 800 punches in that fight so im good with the performance. that one is on agbeko.

i feel floyd kinda got slept on in this year's fighter of the year awards cuz he won so easily. guerrero was top 5 at welter and canelo was the lineal champ at 154. he won the ring belt in the fight against trout. floyd fought a bigger man and had him admitting after the fight that he didnt know how to even land a punch on floyd. floyd didnt go to war in his fights like bradley did but those 2 wins were highly impressive. he turned a pressure fighter like guerrero into someone who stopped punching and basically gave up. then he turned a lineal champ who was full of confidence coming off a career best win and rendered him useless by round 4 before getting him to admit to the world that he had no clue how to even find floyd in the ring. he also got an incompetent judge to resign because his performance was so good that her scorecard could not be justified and she didnt even score him with a loss.

nah man dawson was the number one dude in the division and stevenson KO'd him round 1, and even though Boone isn't good, it was the avenge of his only career defeat. Plus he fought 4 times

                  I'm sorry but I don't see it.

He beat Dawson at his real weight, yes. But Dawson was still coming off a one sided beat down. Cloud was coming off what should have been two losses in a row basically. Boone is a journeyman. And Bellew is a decent at best Top 10 contender.

                  He had a good year.

But Garcia, Mayweather, Rigondeaux, and Bradley had better years IMO.

Interesting pick! Though my vote might have gone elsewhere I can't argue.

It is Much better than a certain known boxing record site that somehow chose George Groves as fighter of The Year, for looking good against Carl Froch.

Like many I'm pretty much split between Kovalev and Stevenson, so I'm kinda OK with their vote. Either way, the pair of them started the year as, at best fringe contenders and between them have just torn through the establish 175 order. For me the level activity as well as quality of wins needs to be taken into account which is why I put both above fighters who had only 2 fights in 2013.

I understand the point that Stevenson beat two of the biggest names at 175 but I think Kovalev suffered by having fought names less recognised in the US.

The flaws in Stevenson biggest names opponents Cloud and Dawson had been observed long before Stevenson got them - Dawson at his best was a brilliant boxer, but ever since the Pascal fight - where a very lacklustre version deserved a loss he only really looked that good in beating BHop. The questions were being asked before he ever got in the ring about his mental preparedness and if he had been ruined by the Ward loss.

Clouds shortcomings very made abundantly clear against both Campillo and BHop - basically as soon as he moved up from beating the aging Johnson and Woods it became apparent he wasn't really a world class boxer for all his toughness.

It could easily be argued that overall Kovalevs competition was at least equal to Stevensons, but all I am going to say is there wasn't much in it for my money. Either way, I always felt it should be one of the two, not least cos I like to see fighters willing to fight 4 times in a year.
