Comments Thread For: Rigondeaux's Trainer on Donaire Rematch, Critics, More

BoxingScene had the opportunity to talk to highly respected trainer Pedro Díaz following last week’s convincing victory from Guillermo Rigondeaux over Joseph Agbeko. The Cuban discussed Rigondeaux’s win, the reaction from certain fans and his favourite for fighter of the year. Pedro also explained that he is preparing Odlanier Solís for an upcoming bout with experienced American Tony Thompson, and promised fans that they will see a new and improved Solís. In addition, he revealed that he is no longer working with Juan Manuel López after the Puerto Rican had begun some training in Miami with Díaz. [Click Here To Read More]

Good stuff. But Ward and Floyd know how to turn it up a notch. Especially when the fighter in front is not even throwing.

That sit back and wait to counter style is going to have to get a lot of wins before he gets a lot of fans. That style will satisfy the purists but not the common boxing fans

In a particular order fights for Rigo:

        Moreno

        Kiko/Mathebula winner

        Seda

        Donaire rematch

Moreno would be a very interesting opponent - less physically gifted but comparably skilled, and has a lot of experience at world level.

Mathebula may represent a difficult style matchup, but does Rigo really want to fight Donaire's leftovers?

I don't know why you included Seda. He has just lost to Santa Cruz, and even Narvaez (another Donaire leftover) beat him.

Surely Rigo/Santa Cruz has to be next.

There is absolutely no reason for a Donaire rematch. I would however give Donaire props for enduring another schooling like that. That was shocking to say the least.

If Mathebula wins the IBF why not

Seda gave a good account and might actually try

As far as fighting someones left over then what was Agbeko ? There aren't a plethora of options so he's got no choice , do better than they did, not a quality reason to not fight someone.

I just posted a thread about this. Santa Cruz is the best match-up. Unfortunately, it's an unlikely option. Rigo's with Top Rank and Leo's with Golden Boy. The promotional war is standing in the way of this fight.

Unless a fighter is undefeated, he's someone's leftover. I remember when Agbeko's name was first mentioned as a Rigo opponent. Most people thought it was a good idea. There just weren't (aren't) many suitable opponents for "El Chacal." Joseph turned out to be a real dud.
