Stevenson had a pretty good defense and one single power punch (i.e. the straight left). Kovalev is mobile power personificated -- he thinks, he has balance, he cuts the ring, he has a good jab, and has KO power in both hands...

I don't think anything of the Dawson win personally. He was clearly done after the draining against Ward.

I agree with you on everything you said except ward getting ko'ed by kov if he doesnt wrestle him. Ward is a very skillfull fighter, and his olympic gold medal proofs that. Kovalev wasnt close to wards level in the amateurs, and if im not misstaken korobov was one of many to keep kovalev out of the big tournaments. With that said, i think ward outboxes kovalev pretty easy.

I not dis*****g that Ward would have a good chance of beating Kovalev, but the gap in skill would probably be less than any other fighter Ward has yet faced. You are correct in stating that Kovalev was overlooked for Korobov (and Beterbiev for that matter) but Kovalev maintains that the reasons for this were less to do with ability than the internal politics of the Russian amateur system. In fact Kovalev freely says that the main reason for him turning pro was his (in his opinion) unfair treatment at the hands of the Russian amateur hierarchy.

With regards to Kovalevs 2013 resume in comparison to Stevensons, a coupla things jump out. Although Dawson was technically the biggest win of either, Dawson was coming off a bad loss and a long lay-off. Cloud was coming off the Hopkins loss and had been comprehensively outboxed by Campillo (who Kovalev destroyed in 3). Bellew had previously been beaten by Cleverly, who Kovalev ruined in 3 (OK - officially 4). Their only common opponent Boone was beaten twice by Kovalev by SD in 2010 and TKO2 in 2012.

In short, in the only direct ways we have of comparing the two Kovalev has actually beaten the better fighters and done so more decisively, with the exception of Dawson whose performance over the last 4 years has been less than spectacular (with the admittedly major exception of outpointing Hopkins last year).

Natan cleverly is on carl froch level, and look what koalev did to him.
It was a complete mismatch.

The ameteur background only proves soo much, sometimes fighters are born out of fire.

Pac was nothing special and getting koed when he started out like many others.

Ward is tricky, and very very technical, but the guy to beat him is a guy like koalev

Both fought 4 times. But Kovalev has more impressive wins.

Stevenson's best win is Dawson, and that was a huge win he won the titles. But Dawson was coming off a brutal beating against Andre Ward where he got knocked down 3 times and then knocked out. But still he had a title, so a wins a win and it was a big win.

But Kovalev beat Cleverly and Campillo, those wins are more impressive than Cloud and Bellew. Because Campillo beat Cloud and got robbed (one of the worst robberies of the year), and then Cloud was also coming off a loss to Hopkins. Cleverly beat Bellew, he was undefeated, and Kovalev went to his hometown and took the belt from him.

So if you look at it like Cleverly> Bellew, Campillo> Cloud, Dawson >Sillakh. (I ignored White and Boone, as they are journeymen). Kovalev had a better year. Not way better, but slightly better.
