Have the thread locked or something lol Or we gna end up with 2014/2013 foty especially if one of them fights again. Imo if Maidana wins anything again he would get ungodly amount of votes. He is nsb most loved fighter of 2013 XD

    • For me it has to be Stevenson, came from nowhere to being the man in 12 months.

There should be another award for 'fighter you'd like to buy a beer' which would obviously be between Maidana and Rigondeaux.

All three fighters fought similar schedules (four times this year) and they won all four fights by (T)KO. But Stevenson and Kovalev had a higher quality of opposition than Golovkin.
I agree with most of your post. In fact, I think GGG and Kovalev should be leading the poll. But not so much Stevenson.

In Stevenson's case, he has wins over fighters who have not looked good at all in their recent fights. Bellow showing struggles in both fights with Chilemba. Dawson coming off being KO'd at SMW. A Journyman in Boone (who once conquered AS). And Cloud, who has been highly criticized, coming off a loss to Hopkins and robbery win over Campillo. Although his activity is noteworthy, I feel he's got the lesser 2013 resume of the 3.

Kovalev has great wins over 3 pretty relevant LHWs. Sillakh, who has a great amount of ability and big amateur standout, but also chinny and inexperienced in the pros. Cleverly, although undefeated, was relatively untested and only had Bellow on his resume. And Campillo, who could give anyone in the division a run for their money, but incredibly chinny. Cornelius White, who also is relatively untested and inexperienced.

When it comes down to fighter of the year, we have to break it down by performance and not by paper.

Comparing GGG's wins with Kovalevs in terms of threat and outcome, I would personally equate their fights like so:

Campillo = Rosado (both are always in with best in their divisions, typically take the hard fights, stay competitive. Campillo quite a bit chinnier, Kovalev would have his card 9x's out of 10)
Sillakh < Stevens (Stevens much more experienced and tested)
Cleverly < Macklin (Macklin also much more tested, especially with higher echelon fighters)
White < Ishida (Ishida has been in bigger fights, pitted as a durable fighter)

          Macklin > Campillo > Stevens > Rosado > Cleverly > Sillakh > Ishida > White

This is all opinion though, I can see someone disagreeing.

All of these three were more like the "breakthrough fighters" of the year... Even if Golovkin was around already.

I agree with that. I initially made my comment because I felt Golovkin wouldn't get the award. I feel that Kovalev and Stevenson have slightly outdone him and they all had a similar type of year. I don't think either of them should get it either though (I should've been more clear about that). It's a tough call but I'm leaning towards Rigo. He has the single best win this year and another dominant performance against a solid fighter. Imo, no one is head and shoulders above the rest. Rigo's 2013 is similar to Bradley's year. Golovkin's year is similar to Kovalev and Stevenson.

Rigo's wins over Donaire and Agbeko
Bradley's wins over Marquez and Provodnikov

The only difference is Rigo didn't struggle at all. That puts him ahead of Bradley.

                • I thought I posted in here with all the damn fighter of the year thread duplicates.

My argument simply was that if someone considers Garcia as FOTY then they need to be voting for Rigo instead. I know no one gave Garcia a chance vs Matthysse and he proved us wrong but he looked dead average vs old Judah.

Rigo on the other hand made a P4P fighter look average and made Agbeko his b*tch.

Like I said in the other thread, spare me all the hater comments cause my two candidates were Garcia and Rigo over flavors of the month Stevenson/Kovalev.

                  • Either Rigo or Danny is a good choice

                    • Rigo wasn't even a choice in ring magazines fans fighter of the year.

                      They had 9 choices.

Rigo beat donaire, who won the award in 2012.
