While he's not Puerto Rican, you can't always tell what somebody is or isnt.

I knew a Panamanian named Edwards and he was black too. Seems to be a trend over there. TBH idk the history behind it.

Aroldis Chapman, MLB pitcher, Cuban. Guillermo Rigondeaux, Cuban. Teofilo Stevenson, Cuban. Bernie Williams, former NY Yankee great, Puerto Rican.

All these men obviously have something other than Spanish surnames. In the cases of Chapman and Stevenson, their grandfathers were from Jamaica. Guille's surname is French. Although Cuba was a Spanish colony, French settlers did make it to the island. As for Bernie, I don't know his ultimate background, but at least some of his ancestors were not Spanish, Puerto Rican, or African.

The reason for that is because most of the Black Panamanians are immigrants from the West Indies (Jamaica, Trinidad, Barbados). Which is why they are Black with English names.

I'm willing to bet Stevens is one of those Panamanians whose ancestry goes back to the West Indies.
