Schaefer on Arum: "He's using Mayweather's name to drum up publicity of Pacquiao"

Money Team Handler States Terms for Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao Bout

    By David King

COMMENTARY | Ever since Manny Pacquiao's domination of Brandon Rios on Nov. 23, Top Rank Promotion's CEO Bob Arum has tried to convince the boxing community that he's, once again, serious about getting the Filipino congressman inside the ring with Floyd Mayweather.

Of course, it's hard for knowledgeable boxing fans to take Arum seriously given the fact he's been the biggest obstacle in the way of a way of a Mayweather vs. Pacquiao super-fight.

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer would probably agree with the assessment, and he set some clear terms for the still-demanded super-fight, making sure Pacquiao knows exactly what he needs to do if he's serious about ever sharing the same ring with Floyd.

"He's using Mayweather's name to drum up publicity of Pacquiao," Schaefer said in response to Arum's recent statements about organizing the super-fight. "When it is convenient for him, he uses Mayweather's name. Mayweather is pretty clear, as clear as it can be. He is not going to be dealing with Arum or Todd [duBoef] or anyone else over there. He doesn't need them. If you want Mayweather-Pacquiao, then okay. Make Pacquiao available and Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions will take care of everything. ... We are not looking to cut Arum out, this is not about not paying Bob. He can have his Top Rank logo on the banner, no problem. He can have a few seats, no problem. It's nothing to do with disrespecting, but if he thinks he's the driving force here - what [expletive] arrogance does the guy have? ... What does Arum think that he's the godfather of boxing? Who the hell does he think he is? People have to come and call him and kiss his ring or kiss his ass. That's not going to happen. It's [expletive] unheard of."

Interesting comments from Schaefer considering the fact Arum recently told USA Today that there is no animosity between himself and Mayweather. Given the history of failed negotiations between the two camps, Schaefer is certainly being more honest about the situation.

It's hard to see Mayweather vs. Pacquiao materializing as long as Arum is still in the picture.

For the super-fight to ever happen, Schaefer also made it clear Pacquiao won't get anything close to a 50/50 revenue split.

"We are using his blueprint. The same thing he said with [Nonito] Donaire, that Donaire was such a bigger star than [Abner] Mares," Schaefer added. "Okay, you know what; we will use your own blueprint. And there is no dis*****g, no question that Mayweather is the number one star in the sport. Mayweather is the highest paid athlete in the world. And with his TMT brand - he makes more money from the TMT brand than Pacquiao makes fighting. I've seen the numbers."

The no arum part will never work, or at least in the near future,,,

If floyd and team really want to get this fight done,, 70/30 or a 50 million flat fee for manny,

No way does manny deserve 50/50 or even close to it,,

if im floyd i offer the 70/30, and if im manny i ask for 60/40,,, they could meet in the middle and have 65/35
Floyd would make 100 million, and manny would make 50 mil roughly,,,
        Not bad for either side

They're making it clear that Arum must bow down or GTFO. Arum does the same thing to other fighters/promoters, they're just giving him a taste of his own medicine. Either Manny stand up and demand Arum to move out of the way, or Team Mayweather will continue to drive off in the driver's seat without looking back.

Oh yeah, this is really the same thing.

This only confirms that Floyd AND GBP don't want this fight to get made.

Too many Khan/Garcias out there for Floyd.

Exactly. Manny wants to fight now? He can forget about even split of the money.

I'm certain Arum will throw up another road block soon. Which is why May doesn't care whether the fight gets made or not at this point.

Manny needs HIM, not the other way around.

Floyd fought Cotto for a title and at a higher weight without Arum.

Did you read Schaefers comments? They aren't trying to cut Arum out. They just don't want him handling the promotion. If Arum really wanted the fight he would take his cut and bow out. It's not such a bad deal to me but I'm not a promoter. I just play one on NSB.

That's basically saying, "just step aside Arum, watch from the sidelines."

To someone that's been doing the promoting thing for longer than any of us have lived.
