everyone knows hes been in the ring with the same competition as stevenson?

sounds to me like kovalev has a few too many random guys hanging around telling him what he wants to hear, because there is no chance anyone who knows boxing thinks hes fought the same level of opposition as stevenson.

steveson isnt talking his way out of anything, he is the champion and its his responsibility to fight the best. kovalev may bring excitement but he hasnt proven that he is the best, his resume is still too weak. hopkins, dawson rematch, bute-pascal winner or either ward or froch at 168 are all bigger and better fights for stevenson against far mroe accomplished competition.

kovalev should go after the winner of pascal and bute, after that im sure dawson will have had a tune up or two and we all know he will fight anyone under any circumstances. beat him as well and kovalev will have earned a shot at the championship.

btw does anyone know what sillakh said about him that made him so mad? i looked around a bit myself but couldnt find anything.

Why not? Kovalev has beaten Campillo, Cleverly, and Sillakh. Stevenson beat Dawson, Cloud, and Bellew. How is that not the same level of competition? It might be better considering Campillo easily beat Cloud and Cleverly beat Bellew.

Kovalev doesn't have to earn a damn thing. He's already arguably the best fighter in the division. No better time than now for him and Stevenson to fight and prove for sure who the best is.

Ahh here we go... The good ole' - "build your name up because this is a high risk-low reward fight and let's let it marinate a bit so my guy can cash out against the "big names" because this guy is a legit threat" - before fighting one or my favorite fighters excuse

Kovalev should fight the winner of Marcus Oliveira/ Juergen Braehmer vacated WBA world belt at 175.. if Kovalev can hold on too both WBO & WBA world belt all the other top guys at 175 have to go his way now.

first of all stevenson is the best light heavyweight in the world bar none. there is no argument, he beat the man making him the man. he doesnt need to prove he is the best, everyone else needs to prove he isnt. all there is for stevenson to prove is he can remain the best for x amount of time.

second, anyone who wants to challenge him needs to prove they are the most worthy fighter in the division to take on the champ, nothing is handed to anyone in this sport.

third, kovalevs resume isnt as good as stevensons. nothing he has done compares to knocking out chad dawson its as simple as that. i could keep breaking down each mans top wins but i really dont have to. chad dawson is a level above anyone else either man has faced, thats a fact. if kovalev had way more names on his resume maybe that would even things out but he doesnt and no single name comes close to dawson. cleverly, sillakh and campillo combined havent even accomplished what dawson has accomplished on his own in the sport of boxing.

in which way does kovalev do more for stevenson than hopkins for example? hopkins is more accomplished, more well known, brings more money. beating him does more for stevensons legacy and his bank account.. he just brings more to the table in every way, no excuse just reality.

I'm not going to argue about Chad Dawson's career, which is underrated and underappreciated, but he wasn't that Chad Dawson anymore when Stevenson beat him. He had come off a drained, career changing beating against Andre Ward, and the fact he was put out cold by the first solid punch Stevenson landed tells me all I need to know about where Dawson is right now. I can't pretend Dawson is still that guy with his recent track record going into the Stevenson fight.

The rest of Stevenson's year is worse than Kovalev's. Depending on what you think of Dawson at that time, Kovalev may have had the better year, period. There is nothing else he needs to do to earn a shot, who exactly is better at light heavyweight? No one. It's him and Stevenson, and no one else.

Hopkins would be okay instead of Kovalev, but I don't know whether that fight can happen. Stevenson is fighting on HBO, Hopkins is GB and Showtime, don't know what that situation is. If not Hopkins, there's no one who is a better option than Kovalev. No one.

So you agree he should fight Kovalev next. If he fights Hopkins next, thats cool, otherwise Kovalev is the best option.

Its funny how cloud and bellew easily got the fight but Kovalev (who demolished the fighters that beat them) has a weak resume and needs to earn a shot

Stevenson has the slight edge because of Dawson.

But Kovalev's wins over Campillio and Cleverly are better than anything else Stevenson has done.
