Phones 4U Arena, Manchester - Carl Froch (32-2, 23KOs) got off the floor and had to dig deep to stop previously undefeated George Groves (19-1, 15KOs) in the ninth round to retain the IBF/WBA 'regular' super middleweight titles. Groves was ahead on all three cards at the time of the stoppage.
The first round appeared on even ground, until Groves decked Froch very hard with a massive punch. Froch beat the count, with his legs wobbling, and was lucky there was barely any time left in the round. In the third, Groves was shaken up and fired back at the end. Groves had a massive sixth round where he couldn't miss with his huge right hands. As the rounds played, Groves was outboxing Froch but his stamina was failing him. During the ninth, Groves was in trouble and didn't look in that much trouble, but the referee jumped in to wave things off a little too early.
