When Nottingham's Carl Froch, 31-2 (22), defends his IBF and WBA Super World Super middleweight titles against London's George Groves, 19-0 (15), at Manchester’s Phones 4U Arena on Saturday night “The Cobra” could be forgiven for being a little bit wary about getting stung by the fickle tail of boxing history. Froch versus Groves has drawn many parallels with the November 1990 grudge match between Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank, in which a world-level campaigner, Benn, offered a title shot to an up-and-coming relatively untested — Jonathan Rendall used this very word when describing Eubank in The Independent’s final pre-fight preview — upstart only to come unstuck. Whenever the super middleweight division is discussed on this site. Folks ge on here and *****, moan, and complain that Andre Ward has cleaned the division out and needs to move up to light heavy. But in essance, Froch has cleaned out the division every bit as much as Ward. He also refuses to move up. Yet no one says a word. Matter of fact, he basically gets his balls massaged on here every time an article mentions him. Why is that? -
While I agree somewhat with what you say....
Everyone knows Ward is struggling to make 168 while Froch easily comes in well under often.
Ward definitely physically more suited to LHW. In fact didn't he fight at that weigh in the olympics?Comment

I think Ward's efficient style is boring to some fans. And Froch is always willing to get into a tear up, taking more risks. I'm not saying this is a fair assessment but causal fan appreciation is still largely tilted towards action fighters who receive more leeway than boxers who do just enough to win.Comment

@alembic: The casual fan argument doesn't really apply here. Because the average casual fan wouldn't know who Ward nor Froch were if they were in the same room and they had on name tags that said "Hello, my name is Andre Ward/Carl Froch."Comment

@Ross: Froch is taller, and has a longer reach than Ward. So I'd say he's just as, if not more suited for a move up. And yes, Ward won an Olympic gold medal at light heavy, which has a 173lb limit in the amateurs. But that's really where I was going with my argument. My stance is simply that like Ward, Froch has nothing left to prove in the division. And it seems like a bit of a double standard to me. Of all the consecutive division in the sport. I think super middle and light heavy have the most similar body types than any others in the sport. So I think the divisions and their respective fighters are very interchangeable.Comment
