Comments Thread For: Andre Ward Addresses Drug Testing Controversy

Andre Ward made a successful return back to the squared circle after a 14 month layoff as he bested previously undefeated contender Edwin Rodriguez over 12 rounds Saturday night. There were several storylines that developed in the lead up to the fight and one of the bigger ones was the random drug testing that was proposed.

Ward refused to accept Rodriguez’s public request for both to participate in VADA random drug testing which in turn caused many to question Ward’s reluctance. When BoxingScene caught up with Ward after the fight, he was asked to address the criticism he’s received for his decision. Ward reiterated the testing was not brought up until after negotiations had ceased and even said he would like to meet with VADA President Margaret Goodman to further discuss the testing. Doesn't sound like Ward is particularly close to Victor Conte any more.

Why didn't he sign up for USADA then?

This doesn't bode well for Ward.
He has to understand, that in today's sports world when someone is doing amazing things, the su****ion of cheating will always be there. Particularly when you refuse to take drug test.

I trust he will do it for his next fight. If he doesn't I will join in on the criticism.

You were a Conte fighter at one point too, Andre.

You've talked about wanting to set an example. You have two choices; VADA or USADA. Choose one and start testing if you're serious about that example. Why are you just now researching these two organizations if you wanted to lead the testing push 2 years ago?

Do us all a favor and please be quiet! You sound ignorant. Your analogy of Ward doesn't make any sense. What bigger guys have he fought? Last I checked, everyone he has fought has been a Super Middleweight, withthe exception of Chad Dawson. So how is it that he's man handling bigger fighters? And by the way, Ward fought at Light Heavyweight in the olympics, so technially HE's the bigger fighter. And he had every right to refuse the test. Rodriguez waited until AFTER negotiations were done to bring up VADA testing. AFTER, not before, not during, AFTER! The contracts were signed and the fight was a done deal. Why woud he agree to testing after the contracts are signed? Please hush....
