  • Can GGG beat the executioners record 20 defences?

Gennady Golovkin has made 9 successful defences of his WBA title and has his 10th defence booked in for February. With him fighting 4 times a year do you think it is possible for him to break 'the executioners' record 20 defences? It wasn't untill Hopkins' 13th defence that he unified the WBC strap with his ibf title. It wasn't untill he beat Felix 'Tito' Trinidad in his 14th defence that he won The Ring middleweight title and became recognised as The Lineal champion.

Can GGG make 11 more successful defences? Can he get Martinez in the ring within the next 5 fights and can he beat Hopkins record of Lineal title defences?

    Thoughts?

I think GGG could break the record, but I don't think he will. He seems really restless at 160lbs and I think he will get lured up to 168lbs soon enough.

Considering the 160 division is weak, sure.

          Can he? I think so.

Well he? Nah he'll be forced up to 168 before that

I don't think he'd be able to get Martinez in the ring next year with a cotto fight looming, so that gives GGG 4 more fights in 2014 without fighting for the lineal title. That would take him to 13 defences and maybe build his profile enough that Martinez would be able to make enough money and cash out on him in 2015.

I hope he doesn't get forced to move up, I'd like to see him take care of quillin so his detractors can't say he avoided him. If dmitry pirog can stay injury free and look good in a comeback fight or two I'd still be interested in seeing them face off. Korobov, barker and sturm are all people I'd like to see GGG handle aswell.

Anything is possible, but I wouldn't put money on it.

It's really silly to give any credence to the number of defences an alphabet title holder makes. That's exactly what Golovkin is and that's what Hopkins was until 2001 as well.
