I know fighters are motivated by different things, but I never understood the family thing. Doesn't that make you soft? Doesn't that make you wanna quit so you can see them again? I think fighters who are motivated by their own pride, fighters who are willing to die in the ring, are more resilient.

I suppose for some it could be like that but I know that pride and motivation can be amplified (not wanting another man to beat you with your family watching as well as having you and your family set for life by winning enough dollar)

who is more candid than lou dibella?

some of the european promotors aren't shy about "avoiding" guys, but none of the american promotors would talk about a world champion in the light that dibella's begun to discuss martinez and golovkin.

he did some dumping on golovkin early on (fought nobody, "gennady who," etc,) but lately he's changed his tune to the fight simply "not making monetary sense for a 38 year old world champion." there's a very honest interview with dibella about martinez' exit strategy, and the cotto fight, where dibella explains that he's just trying to make sergio the most money before he retires. that's candor that you don't see regularly from a promotor.

dibella has made it explicit from the begging that golovkin wasn't enough of a "draw" to make the fight. he's only now admitting that the fight is avoided essentially for sergio's health and the length of his career (which is brutally honest for a promotor,) but he's always made it clear that golovkin didn't bring enough money to demand the fight.

dan goosen was probably going to be the only guy i'd mention alongside dibella. shaw has his moments as well. they're a different type of promotor, though, from TR, GBP, and don king in his prime. goosen and shaw are more from the "take what you can get," school of boxing. they sign a good fighter and let him run, or build him with the idea of letting him run, not matching him to be a sham. shaw's idea of promoting a fight is putting a bumper sticker on his prius. they keep their costs low, don't involve themselves a ton with the media, and geta good fighter on HBO and showtime. they'll match their guys with other promotor's best fighters because there is often no choice. dibella is much more of a traditional promotor, who attempts to sign and build fighters with as much promoting as his small company can muster. he operates locally in new york, hosting club level fights, often with no TV money.
