OK a little research drags up the fact that there was a substantial Korean migration to Russia at the start of the 20th century. Quite likely then his mum could be of Korean ancestry but her family have taken on Russian naming tradition as third or forth generation immigrants. It appears that Korean communities, even when forcibly resettled (to the central asian republics) retained a large degree of ****geneity and cultural identity as 'Soviet Koreans' with their own ethnic collective farms, villages, etc.

Yeah that's what kinda got me, I thought there must be more than co-incidence in the Russo-Korean background, but if there's a substantial number of ethnic Koreans living in the former SU it makes more sense that they're refering to ethnic or Soviet Koreans rather than Korean nationals, specially given the heritage of Tsyus dad.

At the 2003 World Amateur Boxing Championships in ****kok, he won the gold medal beating future two-time champion Matvey Korobov (RUS) 19:10, Andy Lee (29:9), Lucian Bute (stoppage), Yordanis Despaigne in the semifinals (29:26) and Oleg Mahskin in the finals.

Gennady Golovkin was born on April 8, 1982, in Karaganda, Kazakh SSR (now known as Kazakhstan) as one of four brothers to a Russian father who was a coal miner, and a Korean mother who was an assistant in a chemical laboratory.[3][4] His older brothers, Sergey and Vadim, had pushed him into the ring. When he was eight, both of them joined the Russian army.

In 1990, Gennady's brother Vadim was killed in action. In 1994, Sergey was also killed in action. There were no details given by the government officials and there was no funeral for either. Both brothers were lost before Gennady had turned 14. Golovkin however pressed on and used the family tragedy as motivation to continue fighting.

“ It was very tough, very tough. My family, it really tore us up. ”
Golovkin had been throwing big punches all his life. Growing up, Sergey and Vadim would walk the streets with Golovkin and pick men out of a crowd. Are you afraid of him, they would ask Gennady. When he said no, they told him to go get into a fight. Sometimes they wrestled, sometimes they boxed, sometimes they just threw punches.

"My brothers, they were doing that from when I was in kindergarten," Golovkin said. "Every day, different guys."[5]

He is just jealous Borat made "Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan" before he did.

Golovkin is the most accurate puncher among active fighters with an average connect ratio of 43%.

It's also notable that he punches with high volume and power, a traight that usually corresponds to lower connect ratios.

He beat Yordanis multiple times. Didn't know he loss to him. Pretty sure he fought Andre only once and beat him.
