Big punching Samuel Peter eyes Greenberg clash
By Clive Bernath: American promoter Dino Duva has offered hot undefeated heavyweight prospect Roman Greenberg a golden opportunity to gatecrash the world heavyweight title shake-up by facing his fringe title contender Samuel Peter in a non title fight on April 15.
Duva contacted Robert Waterman of Fight Academy to enquire about the possibility of matching the hugely marketable ***ish heavyweight against the big punching, no nonsense Nigerian,25-1-(21). Unfortunately, though. Greenberg is already committed to facing Russian Alex Vassilev for the vacant IBO Intercontinental heavyweight title in Monte Carlo on March 18, otherwise it is a fight Waterman would very much consider.
"It's a shame we did not know about this fight a month or so earlier," said Waterman. "Roman is committed to facing Vassilev in Monte Carlo on March 18. Maybe it's a fight we can do towards the end of the year. I spoke to Roman's trainer Jim Evans earlier and this is a fight I know he would be very confident about winning."
The 23 year-old British based Greenberg, who has both impressed and frustrated genuine fight fans in equal measure whilst amassing an unbeaten 21 fight record (14kos), has always insisted he is ready and prepared to fight any of the top contenders or champions if the money is right. A clash between the impressively talented boxing skills of Greenberg and the thunderous punching power of knockout artist Peter would indeed be a mouth watering clash for all genuine boxing fans.
Greenberg recently scored a career best win over the vastly underrated American Kendrick Releford while Peter, who suffered a first career loss to Wladimir Klitschko on points (114-111 on all three cards) in September, 2005, returned in December to out-pointed Robert Hawkins, over 10 rounds.
