they certainly can't do it for a low level fighter. a guy fighting a four rounder might get 500 bucks, and generates a meaningless amount of money for his promotion. those guys aren't even drug tested. i think the only tests they get are for infections of the blood and other diseases, general health, vision, etc.

if a guy goes through a fight like perez and abdusalamov he should immediately head to the hospital for observation. he should have been given an ambulance ride to the hospital, and gotten seen right away by somebody competent and with the proper instruments and medicine. when a guy starts to lose consciousness after the fight he is in serious, serious trouble. that's a sign of life threatening head trauma.

Ortiz's jaw was broken clean through if you saw the x-rays......

Mago looked bewildered in between rounds and kept asking about his condition and knew something was very wrong.

        .
I disagree. Mago had a bewildered look on his face and kept asking questions as to what was wrong. This was through an interpreter. All they did was tell him to move his head more and get back out there. Mago kept looking up at the screen showing highlights of the rounds to see what went wrong.

I realize hindsight is 20/20, but given the fighter's continuing concerns as the rounds progressed, they should have taken him out of there to fight another day.

Now it appears he will never fight again.

he was doing that in the first round, though. he wasn't in danger of a brain bleed then. he was concerned with his face by the sound of the interpretation, not his head / brain.

he was looking at the monitor to check out the swelling on his face. it was odd behavior, but considering that he started it in round one it wasn't an indicator that head trauma was being sustained and that the fight should be stopped.

the interpreter didn't do a great job, but he kept repeating that magomed was concerned with his face. first the nose, then the jaw.

          • Hope Mago comes through and is still alive and healthy. Watching that fight I was thinking to myself that Perez landed like 240-340 punches in the fight, imagine getting hit that amount of times by a heavyweight. Perez is no power puncher but his punches do damage since he is so big and is a volume puncher, if Perez had one punch KO power it would of helped Mago instead of eating so many punches.

I want see Jim Lampley and HBO talk about that night on the Lampley show to see what they say. Get well Mago

Yet the NYSAC was corrupt for stopping the Cotto-Margarito II fight when they did.

They should have stopped it after the first round when he broke his hand,: said his grieving wife, Bakanay Abdusalamova, 27.
Broken hand? I imagine the grief she's going through, but this is why you don't want family in control of stopping your fights. They would over do it.

What happened is really sad, we are all concerned about this and ref's should have the right to take extra precaution in fights without getting bashed by the fans and media. But at no point in the fight or in between rounds did it appear as if Magomed was suffering from any injury other than a broken nose and swollen jaw or something. As far as the way he walked, and looked and fought and threw punches and was defending himself, there was no way to tell the future. If he showed any symptoms of being severely injured in the head, unfortunately for him he did a great job of hiding it from his corner, ref and doctors during the fight.

                  • I'm curious to know - did HBO mention Mago on this week's broadcast?

                    • I can't help but question his care at the hospital. I wonder if some oversight happened with his treatment and helped to induce the stroke. Keep in mind that Mago decided to be put into the coma and have his head cut open, rather than entering the hospital in a coma.
