    Standing 8 Count?

how does a standing eight count go into effect? the only one ive ever seen was in wlad/brewster when wlad got a standing 8 count.

what has to happen for a standing 8 count to be called?

I think they should use it more often it seems like they are stopping fights quickly lately to avoid fighters getting hurt but they should instead of stopping the fight right away see if a standing 8 count will help the fighter in trouble be able to continue and then just deduct a point like you would if it were an actual KD..........But this is just my thoughts I am nterested to hear what others have to say about this.

      here's some info i found..

If a fighter looks helpless and receives several blows to the head or body but continues to stand, not move and not defend him or herself, the referee will give the fighter a standing 8 count and, if the referee feels it is necessary, may stop the fight at that time. (In some cases, a standing 8 count will not be used.)

I'm not sure if this is the specific way it's done in boxing though.

Well thats like what I said it seems they are just stopping fights rather than giving a standing 8 count.........Like Gatti/Damgaard for instance yes he took alot of punishment and it was a fair stoppage but Damgaard said he could have finished and if the ref would have just given him a standing 8 than he may have.

I know it is rarely is in effect but it would seem useful in cases like this I think.

I dunno...I was pretty pissed at his corner for not stopping it earlier, and was very relieved when the ref. did. The poor guy had taken a beating, and showed he could take even more. He didnt have a chance to win on pt's and so far hadnt really hurt Gatti. I just didnt see the point in him taking further punishment if he didnt have a chance in catching up on the cards, cause he took alot of abuse, IMO.

Yeah why not use the standing 8? I think it would have been good in the Damgaard fight. Now, I realize that the ref probably still would and should have stopped it after the eight but it would help against some early stoppages. Why wouldn't they use the standing 8? Is it because there is concern that a ref would use it too quickly and it'd be a 2 point round too often? Maybe but is sounds better than a premature stoppage. No matter what though, its better to have fights stopped too early than too late.

Didn't Ali get a standing 8 count in his first fight with Frazier? He was knocked down, got right back up, and got the 8 count. Ali didn't seem to be in danger but was still given the 8 count.
