If Meldrick Taylor boxed that night instead of trying to brawl with Chavez would he have won the fight and would we be talking about Meldrick as an all time great now?
Would Meldrick have beat JCC if he wasnt so brave?

No....because if you watch the fight again, Taylor was getting caught from the outside. He was outdueling Chavez on the inside, actually.
He went harder in the last round than he should have, but up until then- he was fighting as perfect a fight as he could against Chavez. -

Thank you for the analyisis. Ive only seen the fight once and that was back in 1990 when they fought! All though I still believe Meldrick won the fight but lost the war if you know what I mean. I'll never forgive Richard Steele for improperly interpreting Meldricks confusion with his corner and distractions as incoherent. Meldrick deserved that victory and was robbed by one of the most incompetent and nervous refs boxing has seen. Steele also broke up a great exchange in Jones vs. Toney when he heard the 10 second thump on the boxing canvas and misinterpreted that as the bell ending the round. Steele has a problem interpreting he is pathetic.Comment

Meldrick Taylor was winning the fight easily, in fact I feel he won the first 9 rounds. The thing is is that after he would finish his flurries, sometimes he would forget to use his feet. He took too many risks in the fight trying to be great when he should've just moved and fought a technical fight. But they shouldn't have stopped the fight like that. That was wrong.Comment

yes, he would have.
he did not think about defending himself enough
but I doubt he could fight any different... he probably entered the rign thinking he'd stop jcc, that was taylor... an offensive whitaker, a philly whitakerComment

This was a similar scenario to Morales-Raheem. You had a slick American outboxing a legendary Mexican who had trouble with movers. To me, Raheem will never be rated above Morales. Anyway, back to the subject, Taylor would have won, but he suffered too much damage in that fight. Chávez would have won the rematch anyway, while Taylor would slowly fade into oblivion and take punishment from lesser fighters. His legacy would have been ruined with or without the Chávez win.Comment

He did lose the rematch, he got koed in 8, as you said though he took too much of a beating.Originally posted by Exciterx23This was a similar scenario to Morales-Raheem.
