Comments Thread For: Cotto Hopes To Secure Opponent Before Year's End

Former champion Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31KOs) is hoping to finalize his next opponent before the end of 2013, according to his legal adviser Gabriel Peñagarícano. There is interest from both Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez. Gabriel Peñagarícano tells Raul Alzaga that Cotto wants to return around May of 2014.

"Our intention is to have a decision made on who [Miguel] will face before the end of 2013. Miguel is interested in fighting near the month of May in order to have a chance to do a good promotional tour," Peñagarícano said. "Canelo People are interested, but I have not been made a formal offer yet. And Cotto has also been asked about Martinez. Both are attractive fights, but there is nothing official on the table. Once we receive official offers, we will sit down to negotiate, review the terms offered and then decide [on who Miguel will face]." [Click Here To Read More]

Sounds like Canelo in March or Sergio in June. I'm cool with either one. This should be good

I wonder who he picks....probably whatever gets him more money.....so probably Canelo.
Too bad the judges won't do him any favors

Will be Martinez because he has better leverage in that bout and Lou Dibella is under pressure to get Martinez a massive payday. I doubt Schaeffer will concede to as much as Dibella would to make a fight happen.

Interesting. 'Nelo brings bigger $s but probably Martinez ain't so far behind and also brings a title at 160. Thing is, neither deal will come without some strings.

Cotto is in a stonger bargaining position vis-a-vis Sergio, I'd guess, but Maravilla is still tied to HBO for now, and they are not gonna want him to risk losing the MW lineal title to a fighter they don't control. Most likely HBO would want Cotto to defend 'gainst GGG if he was able to beat Sergio, and I'm guessing that's something he's not so eager for.

For Cotto to fight 'Nelo means almost certainly another 1 or 2 fights on SHO who El Angel has already had bad experiences with, also probably it means waving goodbye to his best shot at a MW title. I doubt Sergio is waiting around for Cotto to fight out a SHO contract and Quillin is not likely to be on the menu. 'Nelo is a big fight in his own right, but if I were Cotto, I'd basically be demanding another shot at Floyd to take the 'Nelo fight.

A Martinez vs Cotto fight wouldbe big. Much more of an event than Canelo.

But if he wants a win he should fight Canelo first and then Maravilla

I'm good with both. Canelo is the bigger star, but I imagine Cotto will have more leverage in negotiations with Sergio. I'm obviously interested.

                  but "What about Bob"?

Cotto will make more money fighting Alvarez its just up to GBP's to contact them like they said they were going to do.

Unless of course Cotto's team is holding the cards waiting for all offers.

Cotto effectively becomes the A side of either Martinez or Alvarez because of the unique situation. I would assume Alvarez or Martinez prefer Cotto and Cotto can fight either one and it only depends on who gives the bigger offer. Martinez have mentioned that he will only fight Alvarez at 160.

I would assume also that both Martinez and Cotto prefer to fight on HBO, so that's another thing to consider. That's why Schaefer/Showtime need to produce an extremely attractive offer to get Cotto on their side.

My guess is Martinez vs Cotto will be the one that would likely to happen first.
