Is Stevens test for GGG or just another one sided mismatch?

On paper this is a one sided mismatch. Stevens has been knocked down, stopped and beaten by way lesser fighters than Golovkin. He's an ESPN level fighter at best but if nothing else, he does have heart. He was nearly knocked dead by Thomas Reid in the second round of their fight but he went on to win by knockout.

I wouldn't be totally shocked however to see him get stopped the same way his "Chin Checkers" partner did when he stepped up in class, although Codrington might not take a punch as well:

I wonder if Codrington was "thrown to the wolves" too early or he was really just that many levels below Green, who was more or less another prospect at the time. Codrington only had 9 pro fights at the time and Green had 17.

I can't imagine he was ever the same after getting stopped like that but he continues to fight surprisingly.

Is it Curtis Stevens in gray sweater outside the ring at 0:19?

organization rankings are b.s. Wilder is wbc #3 and he beat nobody.

But this is a one sided mismatch. Golovkin tears him up, only thing Stevens has is a left hook

Stevens wont even daze GGG, so he'll be a bum on his record by next in a week or so.

I think the key to answering this question is the HBO execs. They approved this fight and provided enough dough to give stevens a lil more money. They wouldn't approve Mora.
I think they see this as a one sided GGG destruction and I agree.

I would've liked to see him destroy the Latin Trousersnake-fondler, but that would be about as much of a wasted fight as Stevens. I mean while we're at it, have him fight Manfredo as well.

Hard to say if they would have approved Mora. The noise at the time was it would likely be one of the two, but Stevens was the preferred option - Stevens' KO1s had generated a buzz and he was being more vocal about wanting the fight, not to mention being a Brooklyn guy for an MSG gig.

Would tend to agree that Mora would be the trickier fight (and they'd also have a recent common win over Proksa) though I'd still expect a Golovkin stoppage in the end, but from the business perspective undoubtedly GGG - Stevens is the easier sell.
