Woodhall had never truly lost a fight in the pro's, even the American commentators had him three or four rounds ahead against Keith Holmes and the way the judges had that fight scored it was proof that he was going to be on the end of a screwjob - Calzaghe has said that's why he hasn't fought in America, because of how the judges had Woodhall's fight with Holmes scored when Woodhall was clearly winning (before being stopped in agony due to his dislocated shoulder that he'd bravely carried on with). I remember Woodhall had been kept on the WBC mandatory spot for almost 18 months by a certain Mr King! As soon as it was heard that Woodhall needed a shoulder operation, he suddenly had his shot.. what a coincidence
I remember Herol Graham was giving Woodhall advise because Woodhall was originally supposed to be fighting Julian Jackson, Graham telling him to stay on the backfoot.
Woodhall was robbed against Beyer, he'd fallen out with Warren which meant he hadn't fought for nine months and it was purely ring rust that made him a slow starter against Beyer.. but once Richie found his range he schooled Beyer for the last five rounds and got robbed in HIS hometown which was very strange. Going back to the amateurs, he won the Gold medal at the 1990 Commonwealth Games before turning pro, he says he got robbed at the first stage of the 1989 World Championships against a Cuban in Cuba (that Cuban went on to win the Gold). Richie says that the last fight he lost legitimately before losing to Joe Calzaghe was the close-fought Olympic semi-final against Roy Jones Jr. He says that from 1988 to 2000 it was only Jones Jr and Calzaghe who beat him fair and square, only those two who showed superior ability to him.
