remember when de la hoya was supposed to face the winner of their match but chose pacman instead? if he actually faced cotto/marg how do you guys think the match would have played out?
DLH vs cotto/margarito?

I remember. I think it was supposed to happen at 154 though, right?
At any rate, he was a dead man walking at 147, he would have lost both.
At 154 I see him dealing Margarito a Mosley-esque beating minus the knockout. Margarito would eat a lot of leather but probably wouldn't be buzzed at all, and I think he would have outboxed Cotto in a somewhat competitive fight.
edit: come to think about it, I'm inclined to think DLH vs Margarito at 154 would look more like DLH vs Vargas, again, minus the knockoutLast edited by Assteroid Field; 10-17-2013, 10:06 AM. -
I thought the question was prime against prime. If DLH was in his prime, I think he outpoints Margarito easily and could stop Cotto late.
Back in 2008, De La Hoya was a shadow of his former self and was not even as good as he was a year before when he faced Mayweather. I think Cotto beats him on the cards convincingly. Margarito could win also but he would give DLH chances by being in front of him so DLH could accumulate enough combinations to get the win on points.Comment

I agree, prime DLH wipes the floor with both, but I think late career DLH would have still troubled Cotto with a his reach/height advantage. DLH (even a diminished version) was still a very crafty and skilled fighter who knew how to take advantage of this imo.I thought the question was prime against prime. I think we are agreeing 100% on prime DLH.
2008 De La Hoya just looked very uninspired and going through the motions. I don't mean just the Pacquiao fight but the one before against Forbes, a natural 130 pounder, in which he looked ordinary and never hurt Forbes once. DLH even had to back up at times because his power was nonexistent against a much smaller opponent. I remember an interview in which DLH said that he would not fight Cotto because he was a hungry fighter, the type of fighter that could damage you when you have one foot out the door. Those are not the exact words, plus the interview was in Spanish, but that was the message.
DLH of May 2007, beats Cotto, but unmotivated 75% promoter-25% fighter DLH of 2008, to me, would lose against prime Cotto.Comment

Makes sense, I guess. I keep forgetting the Forbes fight. Apparently we agree on everything, was sitting here thinking of 2008 DLH like he was the same guy who fought Mayweather in 07.Comment
