Agreed, he wants to be accepted and equal while he is gay, sure he gets support, but advertising it and using it to sell yourself is ridiculous.

He'd be an idiot not to push that angle. He's the first openly gay boxer and one of the first openly gay athletes period. That's of mainstream interest. There's no way that he would have been on this card if not for his story. And there's no way he would have made anywhere near what he made for this fight if he didn't advertise it. 95% of media questions directed towards him since coming out will have been about his sexual orientation. What's he meant to do, answer by saying "no comment" and go back to fighting on non-televised cards for peanuts?

Essentially it's no different than Mayweather selling his extravagant lifestyle and persona, which is the main reason why he's become the box office colossus he is today. Cruz was absolutely right to cash in on his story, regardless of whether it upsets a group of NSB posters who are lagging about 20 years behind the rest of us.
