  • Comments Thread For: Kadyrov Interested in Ortiz-Chagaev WBA Clash in Grozny

Controversial but all-powerful Ramzan Kadyrov, the president of Chechen Republic, is highly interested in bring world heavyweight title to his Homeland. Kadyrov, once a guerilla fighter against Russian Armed Forces but then elevated to the highest status in his native land, supports former WBA heavyweight titlist Ruslan Chagaev (32-2-1, 20 KOs) in his hopes of taking his title back.

This Saturday night at Olimpiyskiy Palace of Sports in Moscow, Russia, IBF #4 and WBA #8 Chagaev, 34, a former two-time amateur world champion with a couple of wins over legendary Cuban Felix Savon, looked rusty but pounded out a solid unanimous decision over veteran Bosnian Jovo Pudar (scoring two knockdowns along the way) to acquire WBA I/C and PABA titles.

“The next fight for Ruslan is (against) the WBA #2 rated Luis Ortiz. We shall make it in Grozny for the WBA regular title, and I’m very positive about Ruslan getting his title back”, wrote Kadyrov in his Instagram.

Terrible match up for WBA #1 title... I understand the regional belts get a fighter rankings but ruiz & rahman given mandatory shots beating no one . now wins over pudar & rabotte get you title shots? Why even have titles? Imagine if pudar beat chagaev. He would be wlad's next opponent if he got past the unproven ortiz...

A win over Jovo Pudar certainly doesn't deserve a title shot, but from what I understand Ortiz is #2 by the WBA. Haye is #1 and he's injured. Pudar was actually ahead of Chagaev in the rankings so now that he picked up his regional belt I think Chagaev-Ortiz is fine (based on the rankings) whether the rankings are right or whether the WBA should even have a "regular champion" is a whole nother matter (i think the whole regular belt thing is bull**** personally)

Whether or not Chagaev-Ortiz deserves to be for any title, i don't know but it's actually a great matchup. Chagaev will always be a tough SOB and I think he has enough left in the tank to beat most HW's out there today and Ortiz is undefeated but I've never saw him fight.

Semi-related and politics aside: I think it's great to have this fight in Grozny (assuming no robberies) The whole region has been very hot lately in producing a number of very good boxers and mma fighters and I think there's a ****load of talent there that has yet to be tapped into.... High level boxing matches such as Chagaev-Ortiz there can only help further the development of boxing in the region. I'm all for it

chagaev was a great amateur but I think he gets a little to much credit for his pro career. he did beat ruiz, Meehan & valuev... who else? title defences vs matt skelton & carl drumond are hardly worth talking about. he has not been a factor since he beat valuev. he is a solid fighter but one of the worst HW champions ever & has looked out of shape his last few fights...
