He's was very skilled just not versatile his skills depended on his body his body and ring skills were so entwined that if he didn't have one he couldn't show the other. It took skills to get people outta position feint and it took great timing to set people up with the shots he did he had great ring general ship too but ima big roy fan so my oppinon about him is always good.Comment

you are wrong and it proves that you are a noob to boxing. Floyd had a 75% KO ratio at SFW and he stopped alot of top guys like Chico, Chavez, Hernandez, Manfredy, etc... You are also wrong in saying that he fought bums. Even his harshest crritics think his SFW run is argubaly the best ever and he is universally ranked as the 1st or 2nd best SFW everI think that Phonius Phloydius had about a 60-65% KO average at 130 lbs. Pretty good but not "knocking everyone out". Also he fought a load of palookas whom I'd bet would have fallen down if pushed a little. I recall looking this up a few years ago. Much like Sam Peter's earlier fights.
There have been so many really skilled boxers in history that it is impossible to select just one. There must be hundreds who could be qualified. And very many of them were never champions or even close to being so. They had other problems.
As for Roy Jones I believe that he was one of the most skilled boxers in his era, and that skill is downplayed and pooh-poohed by ignorant newcomers to boxing who have not dipped deeply into the available info.Comment

Probably get disagreement, but:
Skills: Timing, footwork, counter punching, head movement, effectively throwing punches, etc.
Talent: Physical gifts like speed, power, chin, etc.Comment

When Lewis out boxed Holyfield using and setting traps, counter punching, and overall ring generalship. That's skills.
When Lewis shoulder rolled Briggs, that's probably more natural athleticism and gifts.
When Wladimir controls the distance with his jab that's skills.. the fact that Wlad is 6'6 245 and still able to move the way he does is gift/talent.Comment

Agree. Against far lessor comp, maybe all he needed was athleticism, but he handily outboxed hopkins and toney. You don't beat guys like that with just athleticism. He could jab/right hand with the best of em, but I think his greatest asset was his in ring thinking process. I think he took the basics a step furtherRoy's skill level has become cruelly and unfairly underrated because of his decline. People have come to the ridiculous conclusion that all he had was athleticism. Roy was a terrifically skilled boxer with great timing, great body punching, a very intelligent boxing brain, and the ability to throw any punch in the book from anywhere in the ring and hit it.
He wasn't the most skilled ever, but he was far more skilled than people remember him right now.Comment
