I believe Cotto Signed a multi-fight deal with TR

Why else would GBP need to sit down with TR? Isn't Cotto supposed to be a free agent? Top Rank is known for making people sign multi-fight deals to fight their fighters. See Pac, Marquez, Sugar Shane etc. Cotto believes he can get Martinez because Segio is old. He knows Canelo will destroy him.

Sugar Shane never signed a multi fight deal, he fought a golden boy fighter after he fought Pac. That was a one off deal.

He is probably one of those guys who said Canelo was a more dangerous threat to Floyd and has more skills than Manny Pacquiao.

cotto is just being politcally correct and not trying to sever ties with TR right after the fight. http://www.boxingscene.com/schaefer-...to-free--70262

and dont believe arum, cotto basically called him a lier when he was offered a pac rematch

During the Sergio Martinez-Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. promotion last month, Arum told boxing reporters that he offered Cotto $13 million for the Pacquiao rematch and estimated that with strong pay-per-view sales Cotto could earn another $2 million from his share of the profits.

"The only offer Top Rank ever made us was the same money as in 2009," Cotto told ESPN.com. "[Arum] made the same offer he made in 2009, and we found it kind of funny. That was the reason we decided not to face Pacquiao. That, and they also wanted me to go down to 150 pounds and give him the same advantage that they gave Pacquiao in 2009, a catchweight."

Why would Cotto sign a multi fight deal with Top Rank to get a fight with Martinez, a DiBella fighter?

Looks like Cotto just didn't want that fight, cause 6 months earlier he asked Pac to meet him at 150. Then he took a fight vs Trout who made him look like a midget, for far less than whatever Arum offered.

WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto is counting the numbers on the check. Puerto Rico's biggest star told Raul Alzaga that his final decision, regarding his next opponent, will be determined by money. Cotto and members of his team are evaluating two possible scenarios - a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 5th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, or a rematch with Manny Pacquiao on June 9th - also in Las Vegas.

Cotto has no contract with Top Rank. He has a very good working relationship with them and he wants to finish his career with them but he is not under contract with them. Read the latest Boxing Scene top headlines and you will find out there is no signed agreement between Top Rank and Cotto, just a strong friendship.

I think you have it right. Cotto has always regarded Top Rank as his promoter even though he left them for a year so as to fight Mayweather. In an interview shortly before the end of his contract, when questioned as to whether he would re-sign, he pointed to Bob Arum and said that he is my promoter, my only promoter and always will be (or words to that effect). As DuBoeuf said, they have a relationship stronger tha contracts.

And Arum recently, on the same subject, said that they never had a signed contract with Marvin Hagler, it was just a matter of mutual loyalty.

And here I may as well repeat what Hagler himself has revealed publicly. Don King wanted to get Hagler on his books, and being rebuffed, began to "make nice" to Hagler's wife, who might influence him to sign with King. Hagler told her plainly.."..... if you don't stop interfering with my business, I'll stop supporting your mother..." i think it's a very revealing story.

And that was that. Hagler began and ended his whole career with Arum and they have a strong friendship with mutual respect. to this day.
