Canelo was a free agent when they were negotiating the undercard role in the Mayweather/Guerrero. (His contract with GBP probably ended at that time.) Which is why nobody can bully him. Schaefer in the end probably offered him another lucrative contract Alvarez can't refuse.

Boxers like Canelo and others nowadays have leverage because there's always HBO waiting in the wings for them.
