He was born somewhere between 1879-1883 if I remember correctly. He's a Sonny Liston in terms of his birthdate. This was because he became an orphan early in his childhood and no documentation was ever found that recorded his birth.

Therefore I figure it must have been around 1905 he really brought that aspect of the sport to the masses. Just before he went on his long winning streak that is famous for containing wins against fighters of all race and creed.

The thing is, if you watch a lot of fighters from that period of time, there is a lot of feinting going on and not actually a lot of jabbing. The smarter old timers such as Jack Johnson thought they could find openings using feints alone. Tucan realised that there is no substitute for an active jab as it forces your opponent to react and move their fists and can actually block their vision and stun them briefly if you land, regardless of the power.

We have been through it before BB. You overrate the guy because you think it's hip and because of his Scottish ancestors.

Well that may or may not have something to do with it though.

Having the Scottish will to fight anyone was what inevitably resulted in history being unkind to him.

I dunno if I believe all this BS about Tucan being a great fighter. I heard his bouts never got listed because he fought black fighters in a time that it wasn't allowed.

Why haven't they gone back and listed all his bouts?
